Suggest uninstalling avast. Disable or stop may leave some parts operating.

Well, we may try at some stage - but right now the laptop is back with the vendor. But not for this problem - they're looking at another intemittent issue. For this they said the best solution is to leave FP1 uninstalled. It does nothing useful to W7 that's not already done in all the FP's. I have no idea but we'll se what happens when it comes back.

i had the same problem with FF on my laptop, couldnt browse the web but skype msn etc would work , tracked it down to the fact that somehow it changes the settings in how ff connects to the internet , make sure that the no proxy option is ticked and not the auto one. under tools/ options / advanced/ look for settings button beside how FF connects etc and then make sure the no proxy button is chosen,

No problem here with Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and SP1... My hunch is your firewall settings.

Sans say "Firewalls: Third party firewalls may find that some of the low level hooks they use have changed". No details anywhere on what exactly has changed tho.

There are reports of problems with the PcTools firewall, and a dev update available.

This avast user got things working after disabling Avast! web shield and email shield, but that was essentially a problem with the pctools firewall installed at the same time.

Will check that out when we get the laptop back. Given IE does exactly the same though (and we never use IE except for MS updates and for testing when we have problems with FF) this seems unlikely. But it could be that both have been affected.

Thanks GZT - will try that out when the laptop returns. Maybe by then the updates will be standard and solve the problem anyway.

Be cautious when using Avast. The "shields" option are indeed inspecting packets and may interfere with other firewalls. Also check that none of your browsers have the Proxy options set.
