Perhaps they download and when you click "Check for udpates" you are seeing an update that would come down later during the normal overnight check.

StevieT: I open Windows Update, and I have to manually click 'Check for updates' to see new definitions for Windows Defender as 'important'. They don't download automatically otherwise.

Nor, when I initially open Windows Update, do they show any as available.

so you have left your machine for longer than 24 hours and the Windows Defender updates aren't downloading automatically and installing?

how long did you wait?
