Hi there,

(OS: Windows 8 Pro)

Whilst I wait for Norton support to contact me re Norton 360, I have enabled Windows Defender. I notice I have to manually check for updates, rather than have them automatically installed. Also, if I don't have the actual application open (i.e. Start > All Programs > click on Windows Defender) is it still operating?

Above are my current Windows Update settings. I notice that updates will be automatically installed during the maintenance window, but I don't have a specific time for Windows to perform maintenance. Also, updates only download while on un-metered internet connection. How do I change this, so they install automatically, and download whenever they're released, regardless of my internet connection.

Do Windows Defender updates get downloaded automatically via Windows Update?

Correct. Windows defender updates come automatically via Windows updates.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Hmmm. Then I question why I don't see Windows Update working each time a new virus definition comes out. I guess perhaps they only download as per the current settings, which I have no clue how to change.

WU works on a schedule, so it will download and install at 3AM I believe the default it

I'm looking up to see if you can tell it to download everything over a Metered Connection

You can set Defender to check for new updates before it does a scheduled scan

Over a Metered Connection WU will only download high priority updates

You could just make your Metered connection an Unmetered connection and it will work like normal

What did you think you needed Norton 360 for?

I had Norton 360 Premier installed on my computer, but as of late the main screen wouldn't load. I am currently involved with a few Norton techs who are yet to get back to me on reinstalling the product. In the mean time, I am using Windows Defender. I've always used Norton as security software since 2006.

I saw that, however when I load Windows Defender, this is all I get:

sorry about that, I'm mobile and not in front of a Windows PC to check

Its definitely in Local Group Policy

fire up the MMC, add Group Policy and go into System Settings container

from memory its under console root\local computer policy\computer configuration\admin templates\windows component\windows defender

its probably called something like "check for new signatures before scans"

I find it incredible that Microsoft makes security a priority but Windows Update lists Microsoft Security Essentials virus list updates as "optional".

Security shouldn't be optional. It should mandatory and be automatically installed if the user PC is set to automatically install updates.

My updates only install during a certain time frame (which I haven't even set). Is there anyway to have them installed once downloaded (and Windows Update picks up any update released at any time)?

I await a reply from nathan regarding allowing downloading of updates on metered connections.

metered connections = 60GB per month data on TelstraClear? Unmetered would be unlimited data allowance wouldn't it?

Windows Defender in Windows 8 is a full anti malware solution including AV

You don't install MSE in Windows 8
