freitasm: Those Sidebar Gadgets that report CPU and memory... Are they wrong, even though "Made for Vista"?

Seems like its the "Memory Meter" gadget from http://thehobbylounge.com/

I don't know if this Gadget is wrong or if its "Made for Vista" :) as these aren' t Gadgets coded by Microsoft, so no knowledge into them

All the info is there in Task Manager - available memory is already implicitly shown in at least two different places (the memory usage graph and the status bar)

I'm not going by the memory used in the performance tab in the task manager, I use the Multimeter(D) Sidebar gadget, but when I referred to services using 600MB of ram, I was using task manager, and checking the memory usage of one of the svchost.exe processes, then checking which services that process is actually running, and trimming off the useless ones. By doing so, I took the ram usage of services from 600MB to around 180MB. So yeah, first off that is the actual ram usage of the services, not the entire computer, and unless your display of ram usage of individual processes is a load of crap, that is the actual ram usage, not a misinterpretation of whats shown on the performance tab.

um...you can have an MPEG as your desktop background (DreamScene). I think that's original?

. Ditto, I could have 3D screensavers as the background but, eyecandy lowers system performance.

Wow @ Vista's memory usage. I get angry with my applications when more than 70-100MB of RAM is locked pages, including kernel.

hehe, there you go then. Also, Call of Duty 2 won't run on Vista. I retract some of my praise. ;)

in my network i do have more than 50 notebooks with vista and around 20 desktops with Vista ultimate in common i have seen vista need more than 1GB at begin with few applications it cache like 1.1-1.7GB page file goes 1300MB-2000MB sometimes
this is really this time Microsoft is asking too much , first of all Vista is expensive then again hardware.
as a corporate IT manager I'm not recommend to go for a vista upgrade at this moment! anyone out there who done who invest on vista already?

But then there are other things to consider. For example, is there a requirement for the entire hard drive to be encrypted? If so, Vista could be a solution since the entire system - including the OS, can be encrypted.

Simply saying an OS is not recommended because of memory usage is not enough. Perhaps the specific applications you have there are using too much? Or perhaps you don't have the same requirements others have?

There's no sure formula for everything. Each different case must be treated separately. General advice such as "don't use this or that" because of a single point is something to take with a grain of salt.

The common dinominator is of course the all mighty money. ...Or is it? I would say its most people's dinominator.

I have a Vista machine that I can play around with and break. Its not my primary system though. I haven't broken it yet, but it has caused my compatibility problems. Usually its a case of the allow/disallow thing breaking applications which can't handle a delay in the socket connection. No actual system 'faults' yet. Aside from wiggling the mouse not releasing the suspend feature. I'm not going to blame Vista for that one - my Ubuntu won't even standby.

The Vista machine I have access to hasn't broken yet. And its very snappy. As far as what the OS does it isn't such a bad thing. Because it only really does what XP does as far as clueless end-user is concerned.

It seems all the clueless 'first impressions' of Vista are that its just like XP but with eyecandy. I know they're wrong but that is what people's first impressions are. The general audience just aren't impressed it seems.

As far as my primary OS goes: People looking at Beryl with the whole computer using <200MB RAM with various apps open floating about has made many people go "wow! thats free?"

Various geekzoners will know about my 'linux challenge'. Its extended to games now. Many many people I have talked to say they'd forget Vista if it weren't for the games. Or replace games with -xxx- application. Does anyone else pick up a 'I dont like Vista, but Ill use it anyway' impression from gamers or other people? You certainly see it on forums.

Freitasm, my point is the when we need to apply this formula situation here in my point less people are ready becoz they are not aware of new features and technology new trends. my point if view still its not ideal to go as primary OS .

That kinda jives with what I said about the clueless first impressions. People don't immediately see a 'new' thing about Vista that is worth their $$$. (In general I mean..at least from what Ive seen)

I use Vista as my primary OS.

All software I use regularly has been converted to Vista so no probs - examples - Roxio suite of products, Nokia PC Suite, Canon Zoombrowser, iTunes, and the most recent IrfanView.

I have had issues, but nothing too serious in my mind. I am happy to keep using Vista - I consider it very stable, better than XP was when it came out.

I am an IT professional, I look after my machines, but here are the issues I have had :

- a version of Nero wrote a registry change that obliterates Vistas ability to produce thumbnails (live icons) for movies, but as usual they haven't come up with a fix, they just removed the issue and carried on without trying to fix machines thay have broken. This isn't a Microsoft issue, it is a Nero one. As you can see from the list above, I don't use Nero any more. There is no excuse for that behaviour. My Vista is now broken in that area, and I will have to reinstall to get that functionality back.

- Windows Update corrupted its folders. I wasn't getting any updates, and thought this was fine, as I thought there weren't any. However Windows Defender said that it hadn't been updated in several days, and I thought this was strange. Looking up at microsoft, the fix was to delete the folder that windows update uses as a cache, and start again. Immediately it all worked fine, and I got new updates I didn't know existed. This is quite serious, as the Windows Update MEchanism is the only mechanism that needs to work in windows.

- I had a blue screen once, soon after I installed. It is the first blue screen I have seen in several years - I thought they had been removed from the OS. It said there was a glitch with a timeout where the second cpu did not respond at a system level - this looks like a hardware issue - I have a Core2 Laptop by the way. I assume that this isn't a Microsoft Issue, as I have not had it since, and I have since installed a patch that Intel released where there was some sort of bug in their microcode controlling the CPUs.

Minor - sometimes not all desktop gadgets open up.

ReadyBoost is a great feature. It does give a good speed boost to the machine. Don't unplug the ReadyBoost memory stick without stopping it first. Definitely DO NOT unplug it after you have said stop, but before it has finished stopping. (PS This was after corruptions above).

I have no idea how to handle unplugging my laptop from the dock if the ReadyBoost stick is plugged into the dock and I eject my PC from the dock.

The sleep feature is well implemented and I don't shut down my laptop any more. This is a selling point for me.

Remind me to write a blog about it sometime.

Possible it is anywhere. But is not seen with good eyes, and if it's a company I am sure there would be harsher consequences.
