You will notice that asking this here will probably give you a different view of the Windows Vista market. That's because about 15% of Geekzone users are already using Windows Vista, because the audience here is more technical, while if you ask the same questions on a site like NZ Herald probably not many will be using it, because it's a more general audience...

To answer your questions, yes I am using Windows Vista since November 2006, when it was updated with the RTM, and I have no problems running it with my computers now (except the odd thing with SQL 2005).

I have been using Vista for 18months, as my Primary OS since July last year (pre-release builds). I have the final version running on 3PC's and a laptop. I love it. We are also running the business edition at work

w'eve ordered 10+ laptops in the last month or so, they all came with vista -- but we never bothered booting the default OS.

so M$ stats will be all lies, counting every linux user who recieve hardware with an OS they don't want.

Most? Hardly. Most people probably don't even know about Windows Vista, and for most people Windows XP is more than what they need.

I have Vista on my desktop, however its hardly my primary OS or computer. Instead I opt for OS X* and my Macbook.

* before the infamous mac trolls lock onto the scent of a good old windows vs mac vs linux vs <your name here>... it is my personal preference.

choose the right one for you today, and then don't be afraid to pick another one tomorrow.

and fight vendor lockin whereever it appears.

I have XP home on the work PC.

One with other pc I have 3 HDD all with different OS.

The main one is XP PRO, another is Vista Business and the other one runs Ubuntu.

I love having choice :p

I've been using Vista Ultimate x64 on my gaming machine for a few months now, and more recently on my new laptop, and I'm rather happy with it. Its reasonably stable, generally I go a few weeks between reboots without any problems, application compatibility is excellent - I haven't run into anything that won't work on Vista x64 that would run on XP x64, and the driver support is reasonably good in most areas, although (for x64, at least) TV tuner card drivers are still nigh-impossible to find.

Having said that, the NVIDIA Graphics drivers can be somewhat problematic, earlier versions tended to cause the system to crash a lot, and while that seems to be gone now, they still lack some of the features of the XP drivers, such as the classic control panel, and more advanced customisation options.

It runs great on my windows box, which is a Socket 939 Athlon64 X2 4800+, with 2gb of ram and a GeForce 7800GTX 512MB, and most of the games I've tried also run very well, despite many benchmarks showing significantly reduced gaming performance in Vista.

Having said that, for a while whilst some faulty memory was being replaced, and I was down to 1gb, it ran significantly worse, I would definitely recommend 2GB of ram when running Vista. My laptop actually only has 1GB of ram, and it runs reasonably well (even with both cores scaled down to 800mhz while its on battery), though booting and shutting down take a lot longer than XP.

Overall I'd say it is definitely the best version of Windows so far, but it does suffer from the same drawbacks of previous versions - driver support can make or break the stability, when applications crash, frequently the OS does too, and its horribly, horribly bloated - It took nearly a half hour to turn off all the crap it runs by default that I neither wanted nor needed when I first installed it, and before I disabled all the running services that I didn't need, they were using 600MB of ram.

So yeah, definitely the best version of Windows, but I'd still go for Linux for any system that wasn't either used for gaming, needed certain windows applications, or had some newish pieces of hardware that didnt yet have linux kernel support, and on any slightly older/low end systems, I'd recommend going with XP or 2k instead.

Only 2GB being seriously high? I have 2GB now in the "powerbox" soon to have 4GB.

Vista is ok if you are a basic family user and use it for connecting your digital camera to your name-brand PC.

It's really just XP with skins and more fancy gimmicks, The "helpers" in XP like autorun and common folder tasks are actually helpful, the ones in Vista are really just an overparanoid pain in the rear.
The aero theme really aint all it cracked up to be, it's just a glossy skin.
Drivers for older stuff like sound cards are impossible to find
It's very heavy on the system requrements.

The only thing I'd consider ever using it for is DirectX10, but no doubt, someone will make a hack to "retrofit" Windows XP

IF you really like the "glassy look" and nothing else rocks your boat then Buy a mac, or run Ubuntu Linux.
Vista is an obvious copy of those OS's

Vista 30 day NoProdCode "trial" just to test-drive it....
