This should solve the whole "app gap" with Windows Phone. With free upgrades to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and above, and with universal apps across PCs and small devices the target audience for developers will be huge and surely can't be ignored any more. Smart move by MS.

Edit: jumped the gun on the desktop mode for small devices (watching a replay of the event).

Andib: I doubt there will be a subscription cost to their os. Likely will be based simlar to OSX os upgrades.
They aren't dumb enough to alienate their customers. No basic pc user will want to buy a new pc with Windows 10 on it and then have to pay yearly just to keep Windows on it. That's just asking for people to buy macs then.

I laughed when I read that. You have heard of Windows 8 right?

Having shared apps across platforms is interesting, but will take a bunch more work for developers to optimise for each screen size. Probably less work than 3-4 different apps though.

So my 4yo laptop running Win7 qualifies for a free upgrade to Win10 provided i upgrade within 12mths of Win10's release?

If so this is awesome news as i was questioning whether i save some dollars and recycle that license to my next desktop build or bite the bullet and buy Win8.1

I'd be REALLY keen for a dock that makes my phone a PC.<br />One at home, other at work and it's a phone in between... If the dock had a simple 'dumb' desk phone plug it'd just be fantastic!

The WinRT API platform does the heavy lifting to enable the screen optimising much more simply

crazed: Not enough info: Understood its free to upgrade, but is that upgrade like a trial upgrade, where you have get it for 12 months, then its pay or downgrade? or is it free upgrade and keep it for the life of the PC?

A free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge

Great news on the free upgrade. Have only just bought a Windows 8 laptop for my partner so glad we'll be able to upgrade it and it won't be out of date quickly. Also got a 4 years old Windows 7 laptop which I'll be able to upgrade. Seem to unintentionally have a house full of Windows devices too as I won a Windows phone last year, and over Xmas time we were given an almost new Surface Pro tablet that my partner's sister had bought last year but preferred Apple so didn't want it anymore. Might upgrade one device first to see how we like the new OS.

Thanks Regs and nathan - this is a very bold move on your company's part! My biggest question is: what is happening with Windows Media Centre? WMC lies at the heart of my distributed entertainment...it'll be a pain to have to migrate to something else.

Developers will no doubt need to add support (you shouldn't expect WhatsApp or Line to magically appear), but this is a big deal if you're a social butterfly."

Sigh... They had this working on Windows Phone 8 with a fudged solution that wasn't "plugin ready". They then moved to a flexible platform but adoption on Windows Phone has been poor to say the least. How they plan to pull this up on Windows 10?

They better come with very compelling reasons because those messaging services won't play game if they are not in front of the users, to make money. If all messages are going through this "hub" and users never get to open WhatsApp, Line apps how will they make money and survive?

What's the incentive to join the hub instead of having their own app? Take Twitter on Windows Phone. They want to be able to show their own sponsored ads in the timeline. Put messages in the hub and that goes away.

Yeah - can anyone from Microsoft tell me if Media Center is included in this free upgrade? If not, what are the details? Does Windows 10 come with Media Center built in (AKA Windows 7) or as a stupid paid for add-one (AKA Windows 8, which in case you didn't get I think was a BAD idea and a great way to kill of a great part of Windows).
