Did they actually do that thing in windows 10 where small screen devices had the non-tablet mode removed? Im looking at replacing my HP stream 7 with something less crap, but if a new 7" will not have desktop mode then will not bother.

Mine updated from Win8.1 to Win10 - the non-tablet mode is still available on it.
Not sure if the new, "comes with Win10" ones do though

Yeah thats what they were saying was going to be not available on. Not found anyone with one that shipped with 10 to confirm either way, and it would be $80ish wasted on aliexpress if it just runs the useless apps.

There are apps for windows 10, but nowhere near as many as there are for ipads. The benefit with these are that you should be able to run office and attach a keyboard and mouse (at least I presume you can). Not sure if they have video out, to output to a monitor and have dual screen.

But I don;t think kids would consider them to be a cool device like an ipad air 2. They will be seen as the person who has the fat tablet with the thick bezel. But they are more of a productivity tablet than an ipad is.

meanwhile Windows has massive catalog of programs - 12 million at last count. And a USB port for plugging in stuff like mice, flash drives, digital microscopes/cameras etc etc. And real multitasking. and dual display with multimon.

What about the smaller pocket sized ones?

they all have a desktop, currently.

There are some large super-phablet devices available in China with 7" 8" that are running Win10 Mobile on ARM - these don't have a desktop. But we also don't think of these as PCs.

Ok, so a atom based 7" will still be useful then? May get one when the HP stream drives me to crazy.

Personally I don't find a 7" tablet with a desktop particularly useful

But you can of course plug in an external display which makes desktop usable

7" tablet tethered to a phone with MS foldable keyboard running PuTTY gives you an excellent little remote admin tool.

Yeah, you need a keyboard for anything serious since the onscreen ones take way too much space up, but the low res screens are fine at 7" for normal windows use. Its not like RDPing into a machine from a phone at 1080P ;)

99c - worth a punt that its the right size - was for my 2 junky 7" android tablets.

I have a couple of these in the car behind the dash for phones and stuff to charge - http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1pc-DC-DC-Converter-Module-12V-To-5V-3A-15W-Duble-USB-Output-Power-Adapter-Newest/2013110832.html they dont have the resistors on them to make iDevices happy but seem to work well enough on my androids. Very low standby current so I have them on the permanant 12v line to the car stereo so I can leave a powerbank in the center console on charge when I am not in the car.

I see these are $299 at the warehouse this weekend.

BTW just as an aside the old model of nextbook came with office 365 for a year - the warehouse are offering it for another $59

Interesting that the Nextbooks at NL dont mention the free 1 year of Office 365 (the Nextbook website does). Maybe its only for the US nowadays?
