Microsoft claims to not make any distinction about what constitutes an assistive technology - perhaps you use headphones to assist with listening to music?

Technofreak:

The question has to asked, If is free for 12 months why not for ever?

The other question is, if people weren't prepared to upgrade when it cost them "nothing", what are the chances they would pay for it now?

The logic escapes me honestly.

Hah! It's like people that wouldn't be seen dead going to go a Pak n Save when the prices are absolutely cheaper there despite being across the road from their regular New World

Last day to install for free... and...  my PC died.    Total hardware failure.  Have determined it's not the power supply, likely the motherboard or CPU.

I'm gonna be real annoyed if I replace the motherboard and find that my Windows 10 license is no longer accepted because it's a different PC now.

Read the post again; the upgrade has already been done but he's concerned that changing the motherboard will invalidate the licence.

A quick call to Microsoft would fix that

If you are willing to pay the extra, it is a perfectly valid reason. It is the foundation our whole consumerist society is built on.

Of the 6 windows PCs in our house 4 were upgraded to W10, the other 2 remain on W7HP. The 2 Sony notebooks that started life on W8 were a no-brainer to get the upgrade, although they suffer from occasional crashes which I believe are due to a lack of updated drivers from Sony.
The Toshiba laptop and family PC had SSDs installed then upgraded and both have been running (touch wood) faultlessly. I have retained the HDD from each with W7HP in case I change my mind.
The other two are an HTPC which has been tweaked and tinkered with so much that I was afraid the W10 upgrade would render it inoperative. And finally an older Compaq laptop that I am keeping as a lifeboat in case there are programs that don't play nice with W10. An example of this is my son's Matlab application, which refuses to install or run on either W8 or W10.

Edit: Multiple predictive text corrects.

I wonder how many people will think $349 represents value over W7 or W8?

Is that the upgrade price? Surely the upgrade price is lower.

If it came up on an existing installation, I assume it wasn't trying to sell him a non-upgrade. Maybe they don't do upgrades anymore. Like when they did away with Upgrades for Office.

I guess when you are the prevalent force in the market you can do whatever you want, including not bothering to reward customers for their loyalty.

This pricing is also the same from local distributor Ingram, doesn't seemed to be a consumer upgrade product out yet.

We have told a lot of customers that they would be expecting to pay upwards of $300 if they didn't take the free upgrade path by the due date.
