As title suggests, better get clicking the upgrade now button folks, wonder what will happen after 29th, maybe Microsoft will Cave and announce an extension.

there's no extension. We've always said the free upgrade will be available to qualified PCs and devices for a year.

Windows 10 Mobile upgrade continues to be free after July 29.

Apart from the upgrade turning my HP Probook into an unstable piece of junk for months I've yet to see any reason why any normal person with relatively modern hardware would not want to upgrade. If you're running Windows 8 then Windows 10 is a huge step forward in terms of usability, and if you're on Windows 7 it's a huge step forward in many respects.

My single biggest day to day gripe with Windows 10 is the dumb way VPN's are now handled. When you left click on networks you'd see VPN's and then a single click on these would give you the connect button. Now this takes you to settings where you have to then find and select the network. Apart from this stupid UI change there is nothing else on a day to day basis that annoys me using both desktops and tablets that I find frustrating - and that's saying a lot really.

OK I'll bite ;)

I run three PCs:

generic homebuilt desktop - went through days of the installation hanging indefinitely at various stages, finally upgraded OK from 7
2013 Sony Vaio laptop - upgraded about a year ago from 8.1. Graphics adapter causes BSOD so internal graphics must be used. Fan always runs at full power on startup, so I always need to do: startup-restart-login. And yes, fully patched
E-machines net-top - always hangs on installation of upgrade from 7. Given the minimal perceptible difference from 7, not worth any more of my time trying to upgrade

One thing I cannot figure out. Microsoft have determined my laptop is able to run Win 10 yet the manufacturer says otherwise.

From what I can find out a big majority of issues with Win 10 upgrades has been the incompatibility of drivers. This has given Win 10 a bad rep. Microsoft has "coerced" PC owners to upgrade to Win 10 and then many of those owners have had issues they are not able to resolve as they don't know how/where to get drivers or even know that's their problem.

I think there's a lesson here for Microsoft; make sure the PC the upgrade is offered to are fully compatible and don't inflict your customers with a white elephant.

I'd love to upgrade to Win 10 but I don't have the time to spend sorting out issues nor can I afford for my laptop to be out of action while I do so. That's assuming there are suitable drivers etc to fix any issues, as the manufacturer has said they are not developing Win 10 drivers for my laptop.

If someone could convince me otherwise I'd be happy to upgrade.

We do only offer the upgrade to compatible machines, and this list is continually changing based on feedback, new drivers, telemetry etc, it sounds like something went wrong in your case. Its not easy when a manufacturer makes a business decision to not provide Windows 10 drivers for their devices. Presumably they prefer you to buy a new PC.

5th time trying to download it for a USB stick. Seems if it cant make the autorun.inf because antivirus blocks it, then it gives up on the whole process.

Have one more PC to get working and its not happy doing it from media creation tool. Possibly because it was an enterprise install that was changed back to professional with some registry changes and a reinstall, so I will try a fresh install of 10 from the USB, and if that fails then just bin the computer since its an old piece of crap dell.

Can Windows 10 be easily removed, if you find it doesn't work? I know it claims that this is the case, but what is the reality here?

My wife has a laptop currently running Windows 7, which is primarily used to control some craftmaking hardware (Cricut Explore). Setting up this hardware was quite a mission, as their software & drivers were a real PITA to deal with. I have no idea how non-tech users would've got on, as the out of the box instructions were just plain inaccurate.

They claim they support Windows 10, but if this isn't the case, is it easy to revert back to the Windows 7 state just prior to Windows 10 installation? I don't really fancy having to jump through all the hoops to get this machine working again.

I agree - I don't understand the rationale for the VPN UI change. While adding another step is annoying it's not a show stopper in the grand scheme of things.

Is it a Sandisk USB stick? if so, try another brand. Sandisk presents it's devices differently to the OS.
