I'm not sure how this is really the fault of the retailer. Lots of people are having issues with it including me on multiple machines. At the end of the day the fix is a reinstall.

Does the mini PC even have enough HDD space for the update?

I bought a PC with W10 loaded and it's never worked properly. Perhaps the hardware is not up to the job - thus, the retailer should provide a working PC. It was not sold as components, but working 'out of the box'. I shouldn't have to be a tech to get it operating properly. Also, I have actually reset the software and it still doesn't work. Pretty clear case of not supplying the product as advertised. Doesn't really matter whose fault it is. When retailers start getting products returned they might ask Microsoft to start doing something about it.

Software is not perfect. Windows is not perfect.
Updates not installing doesnt make it not fit for purpose.

If you buy a car , you have to take it in for regular servicing to keep your warranty.
Your PC's SOFTWARE(windows) may need a 'servicing' from an IT Pro.

People seem to want a perfect product with zero issues.
Then expect to pay tens of thousands (and a service contact) just for the OS .
But no, we buy on price . Manufacturers are in a race to the lowest price product .

If you cant fix it, take it to someone who can. Its extremely complex software , its not a basic toaster .

I agree that, normally, if a particular update takes two or three attempts to install, then this doesn't make Windows 10 "not fit for purpose".

But, since December, users all around the world just can't get the updates to install, even after dozens of attempts.

So, IMHO, this could put Windows into the category of not being fit for purpose, but only if the updates are critically important for the safe running of the computer.

I'm fairly sure that not being able to install updates since mid-December hasn't done any harm to my computer and I am relying on Norton 360 to get rid of viruses etc.

For that reason, I'm not going to pay $400 to have Windows 10 completely reinstalled by an IT Professional, UNLESS Microsoft says that it's critically important to do that (which they haven't done to date).

with w10 home I have had similar problems and eventually uninstalled the last successful update, restarted and checked for updates and tried again.

All fixed.

We don't need a sledge hammer to restart everything you need a moderator to refocus the problem.

All fixed.

You're very fortunate if you can forget what the problem is because those people whose computers try dozens of times to install updates (without success) can't forget the problem, it just doesn't go away!

There are so many people who helpfully offer their solutions to the problem thinking they are always going to work, such as this page:

But, unfortunately, it doesn't seem that there is a universal fix to this problem and even people who buy brand new computers can soon find the updates don't work! I certainly don't have any problems with the Android updates for my mobile phone, so perhaps I should scrap my Windows laptop altogether and either use a mobile phone or buy an Apple product?

there is 500 million windows 10 machines in use world wide with a multitude of suppliers , motherboards, processors etc. My recent drawn out problem was. eventually AMD processors not matching specs used by microsoft. No doubt there is thousands with problems but 500million with none.

Did you try my suggestion?

what is your PC brand and model number and processor type?

Thanks for this advice, when time permits I may give this a go. If I delete the last installed update, it would be KB4054517 installed in mid-December 2017. From memory, it was a struggle to get this update installed, so I'm not too keen on deleting it! I'm not sure that Microsoft recommends deleting previous updates in order to solve update problems, but I'll check this out some time.

With regard to the latest update, KB4088776, Microsoft advise that a known issue with this update is that:

"Even though the update was successfully installed, Windows Update incorrectly reports that the update failed to install."

Now isn't that a great reporting system!

I just ran the command (with administrator level privileges) "chkdsk / F" and then tried to install KB4088776. But this wasn't successful either (yawn)!

that update was an accumulate update which over writes all 1709 kb updates. when you check after restart it should go to March update.

looking today I see an option for enterprise 1709 where you can delay the impending 1803 install. You can watch and see how it goes first. Good idea.

In my case, the PC was relatively new and had downloaded and failed to install the W10 update from the day I got it, so it's not a case of it working when I bought it, and then Microsoft doing something. Anyway I have to commend the supplier, Rubber Monkey, who allowed me to return the product and buy one that actually does install W10 updates. They have checked before sending. Thanks Rubber Monkey - great customer service. They also said that they were raising it with Microsoft.

At the end of the day, if you are selling an operating system as part of a PC that should work 'out of the box' you can't expect home users to uninstall, reinstall and use command line prompts to get it working.

My latest update that worked, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.125, from Update KB4054517 doesn't after a restart install the March update. At present, my PC is still trying unsuccessfully to install March Update KB4089848 and is producing error code Ox80070bc2.

With regard to the impending 1803 install, perhaps this might fix the problem and could be a good idea to try rather than delay?

Thanks for posting this update, it's great that your PC now does install Windows 10 updates. And it's pleasing to see a supplier that took the problem seriously and agreed with your viewpoint (and mine)!

I'd like my computer to be as efficient as my mobile phone with regard to installing updates. My phone has just done a huge Android update and it only took 10 minutes and was successful.

if the PC is under warranty return to seller . The PC manufacture covers the warranty not Microsoft.

In the 1 to2 days prior to an update Microsoft magic changes some settings back to standard much to the annoyance of some . Update is the Wednesday following the 2nd Tuesday (11th this month) in New Zealand assuming the person in Microsoft is ready I suggest you do nothing until late Wednesday. Good luck.
