The above article confirms that my PC is not the only one that can't install KB4088776 (OS Build 16299.309)

So far, my laptop has failed 18 times in attempting to install this update!

It was a similar story with KB4056892 which failed 24 times with the error code Ox80070020.

I see there is also a new update KB4089848 (OS Build 16299.334) but my PC hasn't downloaded this yet - it was issued on 22 March 2018.

At present, the latest installed update on my PC is KB4054517 which successfully installed on 13 December 2017 (OS Build 16299.125).

I just wondered whether other people are experiencing the same difficulties with installing these updates?

I'm not sure whether it really matters, but I keep getting the message "Your device is at risk because it's out of date and missing important security and quality updates".

Any advice appreciated.

I had to install one update manually on my surface a couple of updates back. Now its taking the OTA ones. Maybe you could try that?

Thanks a lot, I'll give that a go by downloading through the Microsoft Update Catalog site.

I tried manually downloading Windows 10 update KB4088776 but this didn't work either.

I got this error code: Ox80070bc2

But it was a good idea to try a manual update!

Any other ideas to solve this problem?

I have both my laptop and HTPC machine stuck in constant cycles of downloading the updates, trying to install them, failing, and then rolling back. Nothing I've tried so far will fix either machine.

Thanks, yes, that describes what's happening on my laptop also, so I guess there's not much point in continuing to try and install these updates.

It looks like Microsoft is well aware of the problems a lot of people are experiencing and will no doubt remedy the situation before too long.

But I've never experienced anything like this after many years of using Windows!

Try the windows update troubleshooter first https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors

This works about 40% of the time.

I have seen about a dozen cases in the last few weeks. All have required manual intervention.

I'm a bit hesitant to try the "scriptcenter" option, I'm not sure whether this has been approved by Microsoft for use by the general public?

The page says: "This script allow reset the Windows Update Agent resolving issues with Windows Update."

It appears this page has been downloaded 449,408 times, but it just doesn't look like an approved Microsoft page! In fact, there is a disclaimer on the page:

I had issues with 8 failed installs on KB4089848 with error 0x80070bc2

This seems to have worked for me and it may work for other KB failed installs:

Bring Up your Command Prompt run as Admin

Type the following commands in Command Prompt window and press Enter after each one.

SC config wuauserv start= auto
SC config bits start= auto
SC config cryptsvc start= auto
SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

Restart your PC twice the second restart should initiate the install of the failed update which seems to take forever stayed at 9% for about 20 mins, it took about 30 mins to complete but it did work.

For sure - I have reviewed that script and used it twice - once it worked, another time no so much. It seems that there is a number of combinations of incorrectly starting services , corrupt files and general Windows f*ckery that can cause problems, not to mention buggy updates themselves. If you have an HP laptop you might see you mouse/keyboard or wireless stop working after an update. Sigh.

Resolving this is (at least for me), try to use Windows update troubleshooter first. when that fails then stop all services , clean out SoftwareDistribution and the BITS queue, reregister windows update components , restart. That script basically does that. Somewhere on the intertubes someone has gone through all the steps manually - can't quite find it at the moment.

Oh and you backup and create a restore point before doing any of this sort of work, right? :)

Thanks for your replies. I'm quite happy to run an "official" Microsoft Update repair program (which I did without success) but I'm not so sure about running the scripts listed in this thread, even though some people seem to have had success with them. If these scripts were also unsuccessful, I'm not sure of the commands needed to reverse them out of the system or whether they could actually do harm to the computer.

I might just wait for a while to see if Microsoft comes up with an "official" update which fixes the problem as it doesn't seem that my computer really is at risk if the latest updates are postponed for a while.

Either 1703 machines trying to update to 1709, or 1709 machines trying to update in general.

I wonder what I'll be doing over Easter?

That's unfortunate, but it seems that some Microsoft Windows 10 users now have to educate themselves into becoming programmers who have to take the risk of entering various scripts in the hope that Microsoft updates will then work. If these scripts don't work and end up damaging the computer, Microsoft probably won't take any responsibility for any time lost or damage done.

I recently went into a computer repair place who said they were fairly confident they could get the updates to work on my laptop. They said this would cost about $140, but if the problem was a difficult one they would have to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch at a cost of about $400.

I'm not sure that even the $400 reinstallation option would work?
