Jedsdad: Interesting, I changed my monitor and then I could see it had booted up ok to win 10.
Now back on the original monitor and still ok.
Wont try and restart till tonight--- just in case
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
Absolutely can’t wait? You have a couple of options to get your upgrade sooner:
1.
Visit a Microsoft Store for free upgrade services.
2.
Use the Media Creation Tool to install immediately on one or more devices (recommended for tech-savvy users only).

kiwifidget:nathan: the upgrade key can activate, if you have an activated 7/8.1 key beforehand and actually upgraded with internet
relax, the Store and Activation servers are just really busy and it probably can't quite process your activation yet.
There are around 3,000 people a minute upgrading to Windows 10 right now
So it's like when you go to the bank at lunch time and there is only one teller?
gzt:ToPGuNZ:ToPGuNZ:ToPGuNZ: My notification disappeared, windows update says it is reserved, so currently using the Windows update tool on a Win 7 Home Premium PC. Looking forward to this.
And it just stopped. PC is on, no hard drive activity, nothing on screen. Will leave for awhile, I have a feeling restarting is not going to go well.
I turned it off and on and it reverted back to Win 7 and provided this error. I will now uninstall media centre and try again. Does anyone have any idea what this error means?
I will guess the imaging process could not target a drive or partition for some reason, but I do not know. Is there BIOS boot sector protection?

That's beyond my knowledge, will investigate. I will also look at deleting install folder and trying again.

got this myself after jumping through a lot hoops. Not sure which was doing it but I switched off Nortons, unplugged external hard drive and USB stick (I setup from internal SSD) ran setup again and all go.
My first hoop that I found had issues was my boot partition wasn't the right size so had to follow a tutorial to fix that first.
All go now but seems laggy using Chrome, no surprises there :)

joker97: Anyone tried a clean install after activating your machine?
Windows 8 was a nightmare to do, in the end i convinced Dell to send me a bootable usb and then it worked. How do you get the "right" iso to burn it the "right" way to usb or have Microsoft made it less complicated?

I read that if Windows 10 was activated, then the Windows Store would have the right key and you would be able to reinstall. I presume that requires that you have used your Microsoft account to login to Windows 10 - I do not use my Microsoft account much and prefer a local login without a password, as I can then just leave the PC to boot up rather than have to wait for it to ask for me to login. I suspect the real problem will come if you upgrade the motherboard (or whatever bit of hardware Microsoft uses to identify the PC), and then want to do a clean install. I googled and found a tool that dumped my Windows 10 Product Key for me (BackupWindowsKey.vbs), and there are probably other tools that will work too. I hope that will allow me to do a clean install if I swap in the more powerful motherboard I have waiting for my test PC where I have Windows 10. I do want to test that process, and a few other things, before I think of upgrading my main Windows 7 Ultimate PC or my Windows 7 Home laptop.
Note that the above applies to old style PCs - newer ones (UEFI) that come with Windows pre-installed may have the product key stored in the BIOS apparently. Hopefully the Windows 10 upgrade will have updated that key, or the old one will still work.
I have lost the page I got BackupWindowsKey.vbs from, so if anyone wants a copy, I have put it on a blind URL on my web server:
http://www.jsw.gen.nz/BackupWindowsKey.vbs
It creates a file WindowsKeyInfo.txt on your desktop.

Yep, did a clean install last night, was easy as anything.. just use the media creation tool from the Microsoft site and choose the right image for your install. Example if you are running 7 pro, get 10 pro. And when it asks for a key, just skip entering one and it will activate once you have logged into your Microsoft Account.
