stuartjmz: ... I'm Running 7 Pro 64, but when I download the media creation tool from MS and try to run it (either as user or Admin), after the UAC dialog box,  nothing happens.

The MS tool fails more often than not.
Instead of trying to upgrade directly, use the software to build an install USB - then run setup.exe on the USB whilst in Windows 7.
This almost always works.

Thanks for the reply. I am not trying to upgrade directly, I want to  build an install image. I download the media creation tool, but when I try to run it, all I get is this:

I click "Yes" and  nothing at all happens. So, I'm not gtting an option to upgrade or to build an install image. It just quits.

No joy for me trying to upgrade my Win8.1Pro+MC today.
Multiple failed attempts in WU to install Win10.
I downloaded the UK-PRO-BOTH ISO.
After mounting the ISO and running setup.exe as Admin the purple window comes up.
"Preparing" goes to 100%
Selected "Not at the moment" for Get Important Updates, left the little box in the corner unticked. NEXT.
ACCEPT the license terms
Wait during "Making sure you're ready to install"
Click CONFIRM that Media Centre will be toast
Making sure PC has enough space (there is 46GB free on C: which it doesn't complain about)
"Ready to Install - (tick)Install Win 10 Pro and (tick)Keep Windows settings, personal files and apps"
click INSTALL
"Installing Windows 10" - doesnt even get off 0% before I get "Something happened. Windows 10 installation has failed"

Repeated the exercise with saying Yes to downloading updates but same result.
Have redownloaded the ISO (thankfully switched to an unlimited plan back in Feb).
Subsequent retries all end in same failed result.

I though this was supposed to be the surefire way to go.

Any thoughts?

Yes. I've installed a couple of program updates over the last few days requiring UAC  prompts, all have worked just fine.

I went into UAC settings and was able to change it to "Never notify".

joker97: you run "setup" from the USB from within windows, and it should start the upgrade

Finally that worked for me thank you

That said what am I unhappy about

1. My confirmed and will be notified upgrade never arrived
2. When I tried the upgrade program I got the blue screen with "something wrong" msg
3. I then created a usb using the media creation tool to create the bootable image. That didn't work either for an in place upgrade as when it said remove media and reboot it simply booted off the hard drive back to Win7
4. I then tried joker97's tip and started making progress but learnt not take the option to get updates during the install as it just did nothing for 45 mins so I gave up on that
5. Finally after running setup from the usb and not selecting updates it installed smile

All in all how on earth does MS expect lay people to do an upgrade ?!

Only being using a couple of hours with Edge what I have noticed so far is

1. my cpu fan is constantly going !
2. my grub menu option for dual boot Win7/Ubuntu has gone

Other than that it works

question: how do I turn on display the favs bar in Edge ?

Reservation upgrades are being staged with a staggered rollout over the coming days and weeks.  Not every one gets it on July 29

Lay people would just use their PC like normal and the upgrade would pop up to say its ready, when its time and then install.

No. Then nothing happened. Again. No new processes or applications appear in Task Manager, no spinning wheel or hourglass, just nothing. So I turned UAC back on.
