- Discovering that the media keyboard software doesn't work on a fresh install, while it did work after upgrading from Windows 7

Figured this one out. Turn out Windows Update had installed a driver for the keyboard which wiped out the one that came with the software....

After mounting the ISO and running setup.exe as Admin the purple window comes up.
"Preparing" goes to 100%
Selected "Not at the moment" for Get Important Updates, left the little box in the corner unticked. NEXT.
ACCEPT the license terms
Wait during "Making sure you're ready to install"
Click CONFIRM that Media Centre will be toast
Making sure PC has enough space (there is 46GB free on C: which it doesn't complain about)
"Ready to Install - (tick)Install Win 10 Pro and (tick)Keep Windows settings, personal files and apps"
click INSTALL
"Installing Windows 10" - doesnt even get off 0% before I get "Something happened. Windows 10 installation has failed"

Repeated the exercise with saying Yes to downloading updates but same result.
Have redownloaded the ISO (thankfully switched to an unlimited plan back in Feb).
Subsequent retries all end in same failed result.

I though this was supposed to be the surefire way to go.

Any thoughts?

Remove Media Centre from the Windows 8.1 install and try again.

But I shouldn't have to.

I am now running Win10 and I didnt remove MC first.
Here is what I did.
I downloaded a different ISO, the EnglishUK-PRO-64only ISO (I had been trying the EnglishUK-PRO-both ISO).
This worked.

As the dedicated IT person amongst my family and friends I had thought the "both32+64" ISO would be convenient as I do the rounds but it obviously has issues.

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

I looked into this again, this is totally normal

Windows Update is just waiting for your turn in the reservation process to kick over before it upgrades

The "error" will resolve itself in time and eventually show the appropriate UI to the user to continue the installation. this "error" is both expected and benign.

Since upgrading to W10 I had an issue with Outlook that Brumfondl sorted for me and I have been reading the thread with interest.

Thanks to all the GZ team for suggestions and ideas on our various issues

one tiny new issue I have just found is, I now have my rear and front audio ports joined so my 2.1 system and headphones both work together and plugging and unplugging doesn't override one from the other as before.

Any suggestions?

Just some feedback. Firstly, I confess I am 76 years young. I had a few hassles in the downloading process to my HP desktop Windows7 Home. On 29th July the automatic download started at 8.21 am, but 4minutes later Windows update was telling me that downloading failed. Later, Windows-BT folder had 5.9 GB. I walked away! Update history reported failure at 6.29pm. Next morning, automatic download started once more and, once again, Update reported "failed". That afternoon I decided (rightly or wrongly) to postpone Windows 10 for a few months, so cancelled my reservation from the drop-down list on the Windows 10 reservation screen. The screen then reverted to offering me a free reservation. Did a bit of a clean-up with CCleaner and logged off. Next morning, much to my surprise, I noted yet another automatic download! Number 3! Again, it was deemed to have failed! So, here I was, chewing data like a cow in fresh grass, with the possibility of yet more downloads to come! So I downloaded the media tool and tried to get it to work from within the Windows 7 framework, but without success. Recurrent blue screen with that phrase "Something Happened"! WRONG, Nothing Happened! Even after multiple reboots. MSE and Firewall had been disabled.
But there is a happy ending. Media Tool sent to flash drive, and everything worked. Download and install were a relaxing breeze! Furthermore, I like Windows 10. It is clean and quick and, so far, everything works.
A final comment that the Download Process should have been simple and trouble-free for all, and that cancellation of the Windows 10 reservation means cancellation!

glad that you got there in the end! congrats :)

did it really download it over and over again?

the "error" code 80240020 isn't a real error.

Rather, (in oversimplified terms) it means that WU/setup needs to show some UX to the user and there isn't a user session to show it yet.

The "error" will resolve itself in time and eventually show the appropriate UX to the user to continue the installation.

this "error" is both expected and benign. Windows 10 would have installed when it was your turn in the reservation process.

Just dawned on me i upgraded my HDD to a SSD awhile back but cloned the old drive onto it.

Is this why i cant activate even though windows 8 came on the laptop?

if your Windows 8 was activated before you started the Windows 10 upgrade, you should have the free license entitlement and your PC will activate on Windows 10

the activation servers are under a lot of load right now (3,000 people upgrading every minute) so there could be a bit of a delay happening there, so just chill and wait at bit

Incase someone is struggling still with the very useful "Something Happened" error.

Make sure you run the MediaCreationTool.exe file as Administrator (right mouse button clieck and click Run as Admin)
Also make sure your System Locale is US (in control panel go to Region and then go to the Administrative tab).

This worked for me.

I was assisting an elderly user with her 8.1 with Bing system and decided to upgrade her to 10, since she was struggling with how to open/close programs.

Downloaded the Windows 10 Home "Both" ISO (English USA) and ran it - keep all settings, check for updates and install - error message
Tried again using the x64 bit installer from the same ISO - error
Tried again using the regular setup.exe and didn't check for upgrades - error message

Will grab the machine again next weekend and just download the x64 bit installer

- though don't ask my why a machine with only 2GB of RAM came with a 64 bit version of Windows 8.1 installed

Sorry if this was mentioned already, but to everyone having trouble upgrading to Windows 10 make sure you have all the current updates for Windows 8.1 (or 7) including all the optionals and also the latest graphics drivers.

This was causing me to fail the update on my PC ('something happened' / 'compatibility error') and once I updated everything it all went smoothly.

Windows 10 running smoothly now - I really like it over 8.1

Tip - that handy search function in 8 is still functioning -hit windows key and start typing - it still works

Still have my little flag sitting on the toolbar :(

I did notice several failed downloads in the Windows Update section for Windows 10 but no prompt to install/upgrade

Will just keep on waiting ...
