And a lot cheaper than the parallel imported ones currently available in the market...

Indeed. Slightly more expensive than I would've thought. $499USD turns into ~$600NZD. So import taxes aside they're going to be making a pretty healthy profit. I'm going to assume it'll be another ~$150 for the cover as well. Going to be nearer $900 at the end of the day.

Import taxes AND GST USD499 ~ NZD600 + GST = $690 + import?

Not too bad I reckon.

I'm not sure why you say import taxes aside, can you clarify what you mean?

Everyone pays GST

So US499 turns into NZ608.50 @.82 + GST of 15% = NZ$700

and they are retailing for NZ$739

Surface RT Pricing in NZ:
32GB $739
32GB + black Touch Cover $899
64GB $899
64GB + black Touch Cover $1049

So too expensive compared to an iPad?

Ordered a 128GB Surface Pro from Microsoft, currently on its way to YouShop. hopefully will have it here end of next week or start of the week after. Haven't had a Windows device/machine for about 4 or 5 years so will be interesting.

How much $NZD did that set you back?

About $1476 NZD for the 128GB Surface Pro + Type Cover + Youshop shipping to NZ. Then there is the chance of getting hit by customs so might be a bit more than that, although it is a business purchase.

I also ordered a 128GB surface pro through YouShop, mine should arrive this week or next week.

What are you other surface pro customers doing for power supplies? Would it be as simple as buying an adapter plug, and letting the transformer on the 48W power supply take care of the rest?

I went into Harvey Norman in Porirua yesterday eager to look at/try the Surface RT. I was quite disappointed to find that the 'Surface section' had a tiny poster with a TV on the wall with a blank black screen.

Hopefully I'll have more luck at JB Hifi in Wellington.

Mine is with customs since Friday, hopefully I manage to get it this week. Hadn't checked it out but assume it will support our voltage as well, will double check when it arrives.

I had a play around with the Surface RT's at JB Hifi and Harvey Norman's here in Palmerston North.  I'm still interested in Surface (Pro, not RT), but I can see some limitations.  Using the Desktop on a small screen like that can be a bit tricky when you need precision to hit small buttons.  But I found the touch cover surprisingly good, and the trackpad worked pretty well.  I'd still be inclined to go with a Type cover (didn't see one of those, sadly).  The weight was acceptable, though noticeably heavier than a new iPad - might be a bit too heavy with the Surface Pro.  But I'm still keen to get my hands on one when it eventually gets released in NZ, and might buy one if the magic is still there in a few months...
