re: benzin (someone broke the thread page by posting a wide post can't hit quote button)

i have used every powercfg command under the sun and spend 2 weeks on other forums trying to trouble shoot and nothing. nothing. the international forums have stopped talking to me. there's nothing they can do. not even dell and asus technicians.

i have a laptop that -requests showed nothing and would not sleep. until i restarted it, then it slept. so it cannot resleep. only once or twice.

then i have a tablet that has this thing called standby connected. if you leave it long enough (hours) it will sleep. if you press the sleep button it won't sleep. pain in the @#$%. i have given up on the tablet. apparently it does that sometimes.

Bah, just that screenshot in Play-Doh "toddler" style gives me the shivers

My advice; format C: and install Win7. No need to fix what isn't broken :D

I would if I was confident I could get the drivers for the Sony OEM hardware. The time I have spend just getting this to a workable solution is horrific. All this for Hyper-V, shrug.

Benzin:
Regarding the Synaptics driver problem, did you try manually disabling side swipes via the registry?

Not yet, I'm waiting to see what Sony has to offer before I hack it.

Looks like it's safe to install Windows 7 from scratch. All drivers are available.

Go to:
http://www.sony.co.nz/support/product/svp11217pg

Then go to Downloads
select Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
and you'll get all required drivers.

The folks at Sony called me and advised that the settings for the Vaio are not in the Synaptics driver, but in the proprietary software, in a button called "Details", and there I found the answer to the problem. This, combined with the other tips and tricks in this thread, I'm comfortable to persevere with Win8.

Edit: Added first screen for completeness.

I've found my laptop freezing every so often, without any error message appearing in the System Log.

Also, Facebook loads very slow (images, the side bar, notifications, messages) both in Firefox and IE, yet Facebook loads fine on our Windows 8 PC at the same time - which rules out a connection problem.

Both issues started immediately after installing 8.1.

Anyone else having these issues on Windows 8.1 Pro?

Did you install the motherboard, chipset drivers for your laptop or rely on the ones that came with Windows 8.1?

I had similar problems and needed to download and install an Ethernet driver from the manufacturer of my motherboard.

In terms of stability and speed Windows 8.1 never had any problems for me. Not so much when it comes to Skydrive and synchronisation to the cloud.

If you buy a machine with W8/8.1 can you easily and legally downgrade to W7?

Legally, you would need to buy a license, unless your vendor offers Win7 upgrade for free (which I've not seen offered, so I suspect MS is "discouraging" it)
