I manually deleted the WIFI adapter and driver, so presumably totally gone. I then added the new one directly from the files I downloaded for it. It reported as the valid one - based on date.
Just thought I'd report back - fixed it - aren't I the smart one 😉.
After each update I check - ever hopeful. Three days ago one arrived - and I shut down to update the next morning. Remembered it yesterday - and switched the WIFI on. Waited 2-3 sceonds for it to switch off - and then held my breathe as it stayed on.
Who says MS is incompetent?
I do. It's simply not good enough to have a vital tool out of action. I'm fortunate in having my house wired. The inconvenience of cables in the lounge is relatively minor. This might be acceptable for games and videos, etc. But for a tool I depend on 100% for my living?
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions. Sorry it turns out to have been a waste of everyone's time. At least I learned how far Linux has come - it really surprised me.
Well just when we all thought this was done and dusted, I have no WIFI again. It came back, and worked all evening. It worked the next morning (still on WIFI). I start the mornings where I finish the evenings - in the lounge on WIFI.
After working cabled during the day, I returned to the lounge - with no WIFI. Fortunately I hadn't returned to cable back to storage - but it's crazy.
The only thought I've had is maybe it's something to do with backups - although I've done them every week without starting WIFI sucessfully. I stop all networking and copy files to a USB drive. I often use Task Manager to stop some processes - but I'm not too concerned about drive C - most programs are on drive D with data after that.
It's hard to see how backup could affect it - but I thought it had gone - and now it's back (other way round actually). I don't suppose anyone has any more suggestions.
Is this with an Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-8260? I don't know if you read the full saga - but mine works under Linux, so purely a Windows thing, and I've found no way to tell MS. I'm so frustrated if it wasn't for business needs, I'd switch to Linux now I know how easy it is.
Today I finally got some time after year-end chaos to return to this issue. Didn't do anything - got straight onto MS. They couldn't hear me. Later tried again - they heard me this time. Told them my problem in brief, then they talked through various basic issues - as only large corporates do. Asked can you connect to WIFI. I said haven't tried for 3 or so weeks, so I'll try now. The WIFI came on - and stayed on. I couldn't connect till I dug up the password - somehow it lost that for each of the three WIFI connections (main 2.4 and repeater 2.4 and 5). No idea why it lost the passwords - but as of now (no guarantees about tomorrow), I have my WIFI back. Sometimes a phone call works miracles (or I could just have kept checking it and hoping every day).
Just an update in case anyone has any ideas - it worked a couple of days, then not a couple of days, then came back for a few days - but currently has been off a few days. Did I mention I hate MS?
at the beginning I note you only use wifi at home. Have you tried wifi through hot spot on your mobile? Or go to Bunnings car park and try it from there for free.
Hot spot on my mobile is something I've yet to explore - never been able to afford mobile data - but have just started an experiment while I have a 50% discount so will look into it later. Not sure what I'm looking for. Other devices (computers, tablets, phones) are fine. As is my laptop booted from a Linux USB. I can take the laptop down to the High St for free WIFI, but not sure why that would be different?
just suggesting a way to eliminate any obscure modem or network fault.If it works on other WIFI access methods it may not be your PC . Have you compared your PC network connections properties to another PC?
My HP G6 laptop in the properties has everything ticked except microsoft network adapter multiplexor protocol which is unticked. I dont recall ever changing anything here.
I've had another unplanned interruption - my wife's health is not great and likely to last about 6 weeks - so time has been limited. She was kind enough not to have the problem in March - she's also my tax and office manager (and kidney donor). Haven't had time to seek an "expert", when something just happened.
A couple of weeks ago I was trying to solve a minor issue and found advice to use MSConfig, hide MS services and disable everything else. It claimed the rest is bloatware. I hesitantly tried that and the world didn't end - and it seemed to solve my issue - and possibly improve responsiveness. I went back in after 2-3 days and enabled a few options - mainly around security, and all is still well. I mention this because it may or may not be relevant to the main issue.
The other night, on a whim, I started WIFI. It stayed on - but not connected. When I tried to connect, it wanted my WIFI password. It did that at least once, probably twice, before. But it worked - and it's so far it's stayed working. However, it's lasted 2-3 days before so not assuming anything is fixed - but the fact it asked for a password before connecting suggests something relevant was re-installed or re-configured.
Something is happening - way beyond my ability to detect. I've read there is a new major update - haven't seen that - but maybe I just missed it. If it took a long time to restart, I'd have noticed, but if it was quicker maybe I missed it.
If this sparks any ideas, I'd be so pleased to learn more.
