rwales: I currently use XP, Vista, Solaris & OpenBSD for different purposes.

You can add Ubuntu to the list now too. I've just configured a Ubuntu domain controller to manage the windows boxes on my network (will blog a howto if anyone's interested & I get 5 mins).

weblordpepe: The different operating systems in question here really represent different computing models.

Indeed - and the multitude of models are suited to different roles based on a number of factors (including personal preference).

What annoys me are the people that unequivocally believe their system is the *one true choice* for every role and will launch into a personal tirade if you dare criticize that system. How dare you even suggest that Windows is insecure, or that Linux isn't user-friendly!?? Why, you are clearly part of the "anti-M$ slashfud crowd", or "just another Winblows n00b" if you offer such feedback.

Fortunately there are reasonable people on both 'sides' who accept criticism and work towards fixing the problems rather than adopting a policy of denial and self-righteousness. Windows is making good progress in becoming more secure and Ubuntu is amazingly user-friendly in contrast to older distributions.

I don't believe there is any perfect OS , its the fact that what output we need what we expect from OS , why most of the ISP's use free BSD or sun , why most of the graphic designers still in love with MAC , there are some trends and facts in the field due to experience we have to select what we need. i really believe windows is the most user friendly os ever made.
when it comes to desktop OS Linux so week with user friendly operation.
Windows Vista user interface and new features are awesome.MAC user will feel the same with graphics effects for sure.
personally i will wait few months to wait and keep on testing before i move down to vista, also possibility of moving to some anti MS product.
