StevieT: I've found my laptop freezing every so often, without any error message appearing in the System Log.

Also, Facebook loads very slow (images, the side bar, notifications, messages) both in Firefox and IE, yet Facebook loads fine on our Windows 8 PC at the same time - which rules out a connection problem.

Both issues started immediately after installing 8.1.

Anyone else having these issues on Windows 8.1 Pro?

I had a cycle of problems, after 8.1 I had to wait for a BIOS update from Sony, then after applying that I had to apply more updates from MS. It's running now, but who knows after the next one.

timmmay: If you buy a machine with W8/8.1 can you easily and legally downgrade to W7?

My understanding is that you are allowed to do this as of right with the Pro version, not the standard home edition.

Although personally I would categorise moving from Win8 to Win7 as an upgrade rather than a downgrade

are you on VDSL with a Telecom Technicolor router?

I'm with Vodafone, on a cable Internet connection. Use a TP-Link router.

I'm not sure if I have the right drivers for everything. Its a bit difficult because Samsung don't have an app that tells you what drivers are out-of-date for Windows 8.1. I use to have no issue in getting updates for drivers using their program for Windows 7.

Samsung have a program called SW Update which lists all the drivers for the computer, but whether I have those installed already or not is another story and a hefty task ahead of me to find out.

I do believe my wireless adapter driver is out of date, but when checking with Microsoft to see if there is a newer version I'm told I have the latest. But the SW Update program lists a newer version. Installing it, however, seems to be difficult. I downloaded the driver, ran the installer but the driver did not update. Unless my brand of laptop ships with a number of different wireless adapters and I chose the wrong one.

it's now called windows 9. put your life on hold till April 2015 (and be prepared for new [fewer] bugs)

Quite possibly true. Assuming Win8 is following the ME & Vista trough, the next OS should be a peak.

The next version of Windows and the next version after that is already in development, it always is. Surprised this is new news, because what would be real news is if it wasn't in development n

I was lead to believe that MS were looking at incremental improvement and this (Win8/Server2012) would be the last "migration" overhaul, time will tell of course.

Desktop shifts are simply annoying, Server side is much bigger problem, which I'll not get into on this thread.

I 'rolled back' the wireless network adapter, and it showed a newer version. Previously it was 5.100.82.95, then rolled back it is 6.30.223.102 (2013). But when I go to check for any updated versions, it installs 5.100.82.95 which dates back to 2011.

Samsung have just told me to use their SW Update tool, which doesn't tell me what devices/drivers need updating or not. The version listed under my brand is 10. something, yet won't update to that version. Nor is Windows Update showing that version being available for my adapter.

There also appears to not be any BIOS update for my brand of laptop for Windows 8/8.1, and my computer still freezes.

your wireless network adapter make/model is?

you're not using Windows 8.1 with a Telecom supplied Technicolor modem are you?

Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. That's all the information on the make/model shown in Device Manager, unless I'm meant to search deeper for the model.

Had a list of Windows Updates to install, including one for my wireless adapter. It seemed to download and install without any issue, except it hasn't upgraded my driver to the version stated in Windows Update. Might need to contact Samsung over that.
