I haven't used Windows 8 yet but have been following this thread with interest. Just saw this video:

Sure it was on an Apple fansite but the guy does not appear to have an axe to grind. The video catches a lot of the stuff in the thread above.

Its okay it was easy to miss as just posted on its own with no description. I just skipped over it. I dont bother looking at ones with no description as you dont know if you will be interested in it.

Interesting stuff: A bit more info on Windows blue

Even though Windows 8 has only been on the market for a short time we already know Microsoft is hard at work on the next version of the OS. The project is codenamed “Windows Blue” and is expected to launch next summer bringing improvements and new features to Windows 8 as well as debuting a new yearly update cycle for Microsoft’s OS.

This next version of Windows will keep the Metro visuals and Start Screen, so no surprises there. However, we are expecting some changes, with users being able to customize their Start Screen more easily with more resizable tiles a la Windows Phone 8.

And here is where MS is shooting themselves in the foot:

Another tidbit of info on the UI front is that the Desktop will still be present but it will undergo even more flattening, so perhaps the taskbar will finally stop being translucent and the whole thing will be a bit more cohesive.

So although Windows 8 is still OK for users like me who still prefer the desktop. Somehow I don't think we going to be happy with the coming upgrades ...

How do you turn your pc off? The way I do it is I sign out of my account and then shut down, can you not just shut down?

Cant find the option anywhere lol

on pc drag mouse to far right until the charms bar comes up and at the bottom is power button.

I have put an ultimatum to close friends and family members that my official stance is I will not support them at their time of need should they choose to upgrade to Windows 8. It is not that I find it impossibly difficult to use, many of the changes are debatable but I would find that supporting any problems on this version of Windows (especially remotely) will be next to impossible. Try explaining what a 'charms' bar means to a non technical person let alone how to pull it out. Only 5% of PCs sold are actually touch capable. Unless those numbers change, it will not be viable to spend hours at length explaining to others how to do the very basic tasks like opening the network connections window, the control panel and so forth

I couldnt remember exactly with windows 8 on my laptop. I went back to Windows 7. But my Windows 8 tablet I just go to right of screen and the power option is at the bottom of the charms menu along with screen brightness adjustment.

Having just purchased a new lappy for my young fella's school, had little option but to run with Windows 8. After a painful learning curve we managed to find most things (eventually!) but keep running into problems where software does not play well with Windows 8, and we keep having to revert to the desktop mode and running software as normal. It's almost as if there are two operating systems.

I keep thinking how much it is like iOS...Microsoft trying to lock users into just one ecosystem. Copying is the sincerest form of flattery?

Can't say I like it, but can see little option than to try to get to grips with it's good and bad points.

On the shutdown problem we followed this little hint and created our own shutdown tile, works a treat and took less that 30 seconds to create:

Well I think I am going to bite the bullet and dual boot my htpc as it seems the best way to upgrade with some people having hit and miss experiences.

What I don't get is that people say it's a horrible learning curve then after a short time I read the same people saying they quite like it. Although I have not installed it in any form yet I can't see why taking a little time to learn something is such a effort. As for the learning curve umm what curve are you talking about as the last few MS OS's have practically been cosmetic changes so there's not really been a learning curve at all just tweaking and enhancing so nothing really new to come out and actually learn.

Yes sure MS have taken a huge step in a new direction in pushing people towards this new interface but isn't it quite similar to what a lot of console users have been doing for years anyway it's just now more mainstream on your pc. Again though one could argue even that's not true. No one forces you to upgrade...or are you seriously going to use the I bought a new pc argument about it as who chooses the pc you buy??? Did you go to a place with only windows 8 pc's for sale??? Did you choose the machine or were you forced to buy that one only???

It's annoying having people complain about something they choose to use it's like those who complain about tv programs...you can change the channel.

Reading this thread I've learnt a few things I'd not known already or linked off to some sites and learned them and I consider myself a better than average pc user (my family would say otherwise and rate my pc knowledge higher but I know I've a lot more to learn yet compared to a lot of people on here) lol.

As for a disaster for MS I don't think windows 8 could be or will ever be considered that. A worst case scenario it becomes a default system for all touch screen devices MS produces. Will it be a financial windfall who knows at $20 for a upgrade I doubt it but a step in the right direction from someone who has only a non windows phone device as his only touch screen I would still say yes (before I've even tried it).

I started using Windows 8 in September, after an initial 2 weeks of swearing, I got used to the changes and now rarely use the start screen at all, with my most used apps on the taskbar. Although I would rather not have the whole screen used by the start page, the improvements in Windows 8 like the new Explorer, Task Manager, and built in Hyper V make it the best version of Windows for my needs. That said, I think it is likely that I will be using Macs more in the future, as I have been using both with no real preference for 3 or so years but now I much prefer OS X.

The best tip I was given is that Win+I brings up the settings charm bar, which is the one with WiFi, audio, and power options. Much faster than going to the right corner then clicking settings.
