A few more options for shutdown with little effort:

Set the PC/Notebook's power button to "Switch Off" in Control Panel>Power Options. The switch does a proper OS shutdown, not a hard power off. (Pretty sure this option was in Win 7 too, so I assume you all know about that one

)

On the Start page start typing Shutdown and after a couple of keystrokes the Start and Restart options will pop up

Or, best in my view, put a Shut Down tile on the Start page (and a Restart one too, if wanted); one click and it shuts down.

I am sure there are others but had no need to go further than putting the tiles on the Start page which was, for me, the best option.

I'd say 80% of people would have difficulty figuring out how to shut down the PC on first go. Why bother with an OS that makes it so difficult to use? Most businesses have only recently migrated to Windows 7 in their internal infrastructure, and government departments that shall not be named are still on Windows XP that plan to go to Windows 7 as their upgrade roadmap.

It is fine for us who can figure out how to complete tasks albeit there is no transparency on how it is done at first glance. Explaining the process even for simple tasks such as to get to the Control Panel now takes additional steps

Try explaining to a non technical person what the Globe was in earlier versions of Windows? There is no difficulty explaining how to get to the Start page or the All Apps page in Win 8 (assuming one has actually used Win 8 oneself?).

To open "network connections window":

If on desktop left click Network Notification icon in the Task Bar to bring up known (EDIT: and unknown ones too) networks. Or right click to go to Network and Sharing Centre. (Those actions are, if I remember correctly the same as in Win 7

)

Else click Control Panel on the All Apps page, select Network and Sharing Centre (in which the functionality is, if I recall correctly, the same or very similar to that in Win 7

). If Control Panel is wanted to be used a lot, then pin it to the Start page.

There you are, that did not take hours to explain, did it?

Were you around when the exact same criticisms were made of Windows when the Globe first appeared on the scene

? However, most people soon caught on.

I bought a Win8 tablet Hybrid a few days ago and found the first couple of days weird to say the least, but now it is all slotting into place and starting to feel a bit more 'normal', that said i put ClassicShell on there fairly quickly.

Has anyone tried anything like this? Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650

Looks like it might be a sound option to bring those desktop dinosaurs into the current age without going touchscreen :P

It is on the All Apps page (so can be pinned from there to wherever you want it if used frequently) but just called Computer, or you can get to it directly from Windows Explorer and the things that used to be in the left hand side of the window are now in the Computer>Options tab at the top of the window or thereabouts.

I suspect a few of the complainers could do with investing 12 minutes watching a tutorial or two before whining

Just watching that tutorial made me mad! I don't get why MS would head in such a backward direction. It's just so much harder to do stuff than it used to be, and less flexible! Putting two metro apps side by side just made me laugh and closing a metro app, now you need to wait for a popup and drag to the bottom of the screen! Hopeless, now what took less than a second with W7 now requires you to wait for an icon to appear which has a delay, and you need to drag to the screen!

why do you have to close metro apps? do you force close apps on ipad or iphone after you are done with them by double tapping home screen button and then pressing and holding the app icon and then finally hitting the red cross when it appears? you don't do that do you? you just move on to the next app and leave the running apps run in a suspended background state.

that's right. the metro apps from windows store behave the same way. no need to force close them. they run in a suspended state and consume like next to nothing resources and when you tap to open the apps icon from the start screen, it opens instantly from where you left off just like ipad and iphone apps.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Well I might want it closed because I might be using sensitive information, I might just WANT them closed, and I never said I liked the way Apple runs it's app system either. If I wanted to work that way, why would I buy Windows at all ? I could just run Mac OS.

If you wanted them to run that way but better then you would buy iOS : ).

Microsoft trying to beat Apple by putting iOS and OSX in the same box. lol. Pure marketing.
