Looks like a Friday Night install for me... a different drive ready for the netbook but my 8gig USB stick is at the ex's :(

BTW, Lifehacker are "working on a virtual machine install guide" and if that comes through, I'll VM it on my DV6 with its 8gig of ram... has to be better than a 2gig netbook!

Kyanar: It won't run under Hyper-V, VMWare, or Virtual PC - comes up HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (with a sad emoticon) and refuses to continue.

runs fine under hyper-v here.  windows 2008 R2 version.

navigating the metro from within a virtual window or remote desktop isnt as nice though.

Anyone manage to install and successfully run Skype, Chrome, Windows Live essentials suite?

Pro tip - if you are going to install and use Windows 8 on your laptop/desktop and use it as your primary machine and join it to your work domain, then it does not plays nicely with printers on a print server when you are trying to add one via the full control panel. Go to Outlook and add the printer from there where you get the option to install drivers etc.

edit - this spell checker is awesome. auto corrects some of the words when I am typing them in the browser.

anyone got a problem clicking icons on metro UI and nothing launching?. I can use it for a minute and then all buttons do nothing, could just be a problem with vmware fusion.

Thanks. I was installing the official stable google chrome which is just a web installer. Downloaded the same beta version chrome as your from some geek site which was a full installer and it's working now :-)

Re-installing Skype now. Windows live essentials suite is still a no go. Funny because work mate with Dell XPS laptop had Skype, Chrome and WLM running which is also joined to the domain without any issues.

Here's an excellent thread for anyone trying to get it working on Parallels, especially if you're suffering from the "black screen of nothingness". I've confirmed that the below steps work on Parallels 6 running on a 2009 iMac running Lion.

wonder_mice: Workaround for issue with black screen in Windows 8 with guest tools installed.

Shut down virtual machine.
Open [Virtual Machine Configuration > Hardware > Boot Order] and locate [Boot flags].
In [Boot flags] write:

devices.video.pci_device_id=0x5005;

Run virtual machine. Install Parallels Tools (if not yet).

Known issues with that workaround: Coherence, Dynamic Resolution, Smart Mouse (Sliding Mouse) will not work.

However, Smart Mouse (Sliding Mouse) can be enabled manually.
Open [Virtual Machine Configuration > Options > Advanced] and set [Smart Mouse] to [On].
This will allow Smart Mouse to work in Windows 8 even when described workaround applied.

There's a new update for Windows Server 2008 R2 that allows the Windows Preview to run under its Hyper-V.

FYI the word on the street for VMWare Fusion (i.e Mac) is that you need version 4. Trial is here https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=vmware-fusion4&lp=1

Havent tried it myself yet but hope to over the weekend.

@Regs

That is quite cool. It is something that bugs me about Win7 :)

I have it sitting on a notebook and it runs very nicely. I actually like the new feel of the explorer.exe windows.

Hey guys, this is a quick tip to get the normal Start Menu back...
WIN+R and then type REGEDIT and press enter.
browse to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
select RPEnabled and change the value from 1 to Zero

First impressions of Windows 8? Hmmm, metro ui is useless unless you have a touch screen, the desktop underneath that just feels like a slightly changed UI. Nothing major at this point, kinda like vista-7 upgrade.

But as time goes by I'm sure it will get better.
