networkn: Just watching that tutorial made me mad! I don't get why MS would head in such a backward direction. It's just so much harder to do stuff than it used to be, and less flexible! Putting two metro apps side by side just made me laugh and closing a metro app, now you need to wait for a popup and drag to the bottom of the screen! Hopeless, now what took less than a second with W7 now requires you to wait for an icon to appear which has a delay, and you need to drag to the screen!

You will have to explain to me how you are able to run "Metro" apps in Windows 7 and how they were quicker.

As for applications that run on the desktop (MSOffice, Internet explorer, etc. plus all the thousands of other such applications we are used to using) they run exactly the same in Windows 8 as in Windows 7, in fact the general opinion seems to be that they open and close faster.

Perhaps you are confused?

Im pretty damned happy with my Windows 8 installation on my desktop so far. Definately starts up very quickly over my old Win7 setup, everything in general seems to be snappier. Setup a few tablets for customers and they have all been really happy with them as well.

Well worth the $20 I spent :p. Only real issue I had was after the upgrade was installed it wouldnt login past the profile screen. I sort of expected that so one clean install later it was all good..

Well I tested various versions of the beta, I have two computers at home, and two test machines at the office and have spent a fair amount of time with it, and I still think it's utter tripe. There are parts of it I do like, but I don't like that many of the things that used to be 1 click or two, are now so many more. I am not happy they did away with Aero which I liked, I don't want Metro on my non touch devices, and I don't like that MS won't listen to me (and the MANY MANY *MANY* others who are giving feedback) as a partner of MS for the last 18 years. I don't want "apps" on my productivity devices because to me that makes them toys or entertainment devices.

I am not confused, you are simply drawing incorrect conclusions.

You are right about one thing. I don't understand Windows 8.

Well, just delete them all off as I did. They are not mandatory parts of the OS. But keep the Internet Explorer tile and redirect it to the desktop IE so you don't get the "Metro" version (IE Tools>Internet Options>Programs>Opening Internet Explorer)

They are free to add back if one wants them; by way of example I have subsequently found a couple of "Metro" apps that I do find useful - for example the Sky TV app is quite well designed (is much better than accessing programming via their web page) and has proven to be useful to me.

Seems Microsoft is going to continue watering down the Windows 8 desktop in the upcoming months...

for the most part I like windows 8.

installed it over the xmas break on my server, upgrade went smooth. had a few blue screens (they new sad face :( is a little to cutesy for me), but that was fixed by upgrading my motherboard drivers.

i dont like how settings dont appear in the start menu search until you go down to the sub menus. eg "Programs and features" (which i use fairly regularly) is now an extract two key strokes away. but im sure this will be *fixed*.

i dont like how metro apps dont appear in the taskbar, theyre running, you should be able to see them from there (and right click and kill them).

but for the most part i like it. i think explorer is a lot nicer. i like how theres basically two views now, details and icons, the only two i ever used.

only reason i upgraded was to write windows phone 8 apps, but the simulator/hyper v wont run on my motherboard, so that was a bit of a waste...

So you are forecasting that in the near future Windows 8 will soon not be able to run any of the desktop applications, just "Metro" ones? You really are dreaming if you think that Microsoft is going to any time soon make the whole universe of current PC applications useless on their operating system.

Or are you predicting that by some magic they will all be turned into Metro applications.

You really need to get yourself a copy of Windows 8 and work through how it actually works, and what the role of the Desktop is in it (it being a screen upon which non "Metro" applications run) if you are going to continue try and give the impression that your comments have any authority.

I'm saying that this is the path that Microsoft sure seems to be taking. MS clearly is trying to move people away from the Desktop. If that was not the case then why the watered down desktop? And rumour has it that its going to be even more watered down in the next release.

I have it and am using it. Quiet like it actually but I find it kind of silly having both interfaces. (Metro and Desktop), which are totally separate from each other. It reminds me of old days of Windows 3.1 and DOS. Eventually MS pulled DOS completely in Windows 95/98, it still ran in the background, but MS did not want you to use it. Ditto for Windows 8 and the Desktop.

I have two installs of windows 8.
Desktop - everything works although some magic was required for the power management drivers for my motherboard. Generally appears to be faster booting than windows 7. Had a few issues with games that have been 'updated' for windows 7 such as Red Alert and Red Alert 2 although a ini tweak improved it. Will keep it on desktop.

Laptop - appears faster at first. Downloaded windows 8 drivers and everything seemed to work, except power management (battery life was rather short as a result). Really liked the mobile broadband support. Had some poor experiences with the graphics processing too - some video files would not play smoothly in the new media player but would run really well in VLC, also had really poor performance with some games.

Made the call to fall back to Windows 7 on the laptop - everything seems to be working much better now. Although ripping out windows 8 is easier said than done, its boot loader appears to go everywhere (including the special recovery partitions). Will probably look at giving that windows 8 license away to friends or family (and if I can't, will get a refund).

I like the new start screen, I like the concept of live tiles, I like the MS sign in but I really think that the Metro apps need some work on the desktop/laptop front. I found myself initially using them but falling back to the standard apps very quickly due to delayed notifications (sometimes Skype notifications appeared late or they appeared and the message wasn't in the client) and the forced full screen thing really killed it when one was trying to multi-task. Personally wouldn't mind the metro apps on a tablet but it really didn't feel right for me on a laptop and desktop.

Finally the price - its at the right price point now which is great to see. There really isn't any excuse to not run legit software these days.

Uninstalling Win 8 is not something I have had to do, but I strongly suspect that turning off "Fast Startup" in the Power Settings (Control Panel) might avoid removal problems associated with hybrid booting.

Ok heres a good example of what is garbage about Windows 8.

Customer turns up today with a Windows 8 computer. He can't make skype work. Says there is an update but won't install it, so I go to skypes website to download the new installer, says show in windows store is the only option. Click that and it asks me to login to my Microsoft account. Is it now a mandatory requirement to have a MS Account to use Skype on Windows 8 ?

ugh, so I decided I'd sign him up for a MS Account (Which he doesn't want nor otherwise need) and when I go to the signup page, it throws an error and says it's down for a while!

It's mandatory to have a Windows account to login to the store. Skype can be used with either a Skype account or with the Windows account - I have merged both so there is no need for Windows Live Messenger as Skype does the job for both now.

Nothing to do with Windows 8 though.

No. What makes it confusing though is that there are two skype instances. On my PC anyway.

You can install the desktop version of skype (download/install as per usual from skype.com), no need for a a MS account. To install the Metro version you will need a MS account.
