While I have a Win 7 gaming rig, I switched to OSX a year ago, rMBP. I know I can dual boot to Win 10 preview now (or when its supported for Yosemite) with Bootcamp.
If I chose to keep Win 10, I would need to buy it (as not an upgrade) or can I upgrade Win 10 preview to the final release? I expect not, but just checking.
Is it possible that a free upgrade from OSX is available? Makes sense. If a No, No, will the consumer pricing be better than current full version traditional pricing, aka quite costly.

AFAIK speculation is that if you are running the preview then W10 will be free for you as long as you move to RTM in the first year.

My reasoning is that when I left Windows it was not due to Windows but to maximise integration with my iPhone and iPad. I could dual boot to Windows if that was more convenient, although OTOH I'd prefer to seek an OSX equivalent solution to any given task. But, without knowing the full featureset, Id also like to be in a position to use Windows 10, as I know Windows as well.

Well they're already getting money from OEM's, their big corporate customers then throw on top the whole 30% cut that the marketplace which might be fed back into their Windows division - I'd hazard to guess in the future I don't see it as a money loser but rather being neutral to Microsoft's bottomline.

Exactly, I doubt the sales of boxed Windows will be very high at all. If the boxed/download consumer versions are better priced, I can see these selling well after the 12 months

tried to install it (upgrade, not clean install) on a very old core2duo laptop ... got all the way to "getting ready" (after installing) and then got stuck. hard reset and it said "restoring your old version of windows" within 1 minute it was back to windows 7 ... hmm

I remember hearing about that a while ago - unfortunately it is difficult to get some hard numbers on the number of actual units shipped given all the numbers seem to be grouped together. If they're going to end the whole idea of big releases in favour of rolling releases in much the same way that Adobe pushes features and bug fixes out as they're ready then I could imagine that given the average person upgrades every 3-4 years there isn't much to lose (as you pointed out regarding the fact that most upgrade their operating system when the upgrade their computer). It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few months because if the rumours are anything to go by we'll see more updates, more builds and hopefully when it does ship it might given Apple the incentive required to get motivated about OS X.

I can see that. There is quite a similarity going on with what OSX already has. Swipe on the mail app, Collections in the photo app, integration, Hey Cortana.

The modern looking UI, departing from the Win95 to Win 7 traditional layout is NEW. I can see a move from Windows being the default OS, as "everyone seems to have it" to a more exciting attitude. OTOH Apple doesnt compete, it does its thing, makes truckloads of cash, doesn't worry about the business market, relies on its loyal following, which is helped by most being owners of other Apple devices. If anything, Android mat struggle as phone owners may gravitate to Windows phones, for integration, an ecosystem, which MS hasn't really had. Apple needs to smarten up on OSX, based on feedback, and W10 may push that along.

A small request - please can we have gapless playback. Honestly, it is the one feature that stops me from giving Windows Phone another fair go.

Clean installed on a 7 year old core2duo laptop with 2.86gb ram and ssd partitioned with 60gb ... Seamless install ... Everything just works! Impressed ... Dual booting but it looks like the Windows 7 on that thing will fossilize for a while

I'm hoping it'll work to upgrade from 8.0? My son's PC, which shipped with 8.0, has steadfastly refused to upgrade to 8.1. Every time I run the upgrade, it does the huge download, then falls over during the install, and reverts back to 8.0. Lather, rinse, repeat. So it'd be great to be able to go 8.0 -> 10 in one hop.

Also, I have a netbook running Win7 starter that I'd really like to upgrade. Assuming that won't be eligible, being a cheapie cut-down version?
