littleheaven: I'm hoping it'll work to upgrade from 8.0? My son's PC, which shipped with 8.0, has steadfastly refused to upgrade to 8.1. Every time I run the upgrade, it does the huge download, then falls over during the install, and reverts back to 8.0. Lather, rinse, repeat. So it'd be great to be able to go 8.0 -> 10 in one hop.

Also, I have a netbook running Win7 starter that I'd really like to upgrade. Assuming that won't be eligible, being a cheapie cut-down version?

what i don't understand is, they say, windows 7, 8, 10 will know you have a SSD and will do all the things that will optimize it.

WELL ... defrag is always scheduled and I always have to cancel it. apart from that it's ok on SSDs.

so, they say TRIM will run fine ... well ... somehow i doubt this ... :D

Actually there is a reason to defrag an SSD. Something to do with running out of file descriptors, or pointers, or something. Plus if you want to partition it's good to move the data to the start of the disk. I found an article, Google will find many.

ah. so i'm stuck in the last decade still ... ok re-enabling OPTIMIZE!

i remember being OCD from young. as an 18 year old i would get dad to buy PC Tools to do 100% defrag where each file is arranged in perfect folder - alphabetical order! imagine how ruined i was when XP came and defrag no longer meant a physical hard drive library catalogue arrangement of my files!

ah ... it TRIMed all my drives :D so TRIM runs out of OPTIMIZE

Might have missed this already, but this seems it could be a little 'gotcha': "we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device"

Are you able to clarify what/who determines the 'supported lifetime' of a device? And will a primary drive failure or replacement for any reason mean you have to buy a new licence? Dead RAM module? Certain number of alterations from the initial configuration of a device? Surely there must be a catch to this free upgrade!?

I expect it means the lifetime of Windows 10. So if your PC was borked, and you had to do a clean install, maybe even buy a new PC, you still have the key, so you can install W10 for the lifetime of the product. Windows XP only recently ended its support lifetime, so it could amount to years. At some point you may wosh to go to Windows 11, in which case I assume you'd need to pay, which is very fair

Just out of interest, did you do updates in Windows update first? I had a friend who tried to update from 8.0 to 8.1, but without doing the updates manually first, 8.1 wouldn't install. After the OS was updated, 8.1 went through without a glitch.

After getting a new mSATA, I'm going to remove my current mSATA drive and install Windows 10 Preview on the new drive.
Any large "gotcha's" I need to be really worried about with the current build.

90% of the data for my system will continue to live on a 2TB drive attached to the system via a USB Dock so I am not worried about data loss.
