Since the update I've also noticed that my startup sounds always play through the speakers regardless what device is selected as the default device.

One question: will windows still apply updates without warning at shutdown? (What part of "shutdown" don't they understand?) Pick a better time (here's a suggestion: ask) than when the device is expected to no longer be powered. Even next startup would be better.

I got the malware looking update security settings thing last night, so I guess it's coming soon to the "normal ring" or whatever it's called now. I'm annoyed that thing has no way to minimise it, I wanted to finish what I was in the middle of but with no idea when "ask me later" might be decided I'd rather not have it pop up at an even more annoying time.

I've had to turn off the defender real time protection on both my machines as it's causing high CPU all the time!

I have been a "defender" of Windows Defender - the price is right and it seems to do it but... Over time I found out that it doesn't really do adware/malware that well. I had to clean parents-in-law's laptops a few times with MalwareBytes. At the end I just went back to using Norton by Symantec and making their accounts non-Administrator. I like Norton's controls and it's not a load on modern systems really. And it does work with malware that Defender didn't catch.

Over the weekend I made sure I still had defer upgrades set;

Now I just have to figure out how to make the permanent rather than expiring in 3/4 months

So here's something different: my Office2016 (O365B) installation has stopped working for saving files.

Word/Excel/Powerpoint - if I try to save a file, the process will stall and the app will crash. It's at the point now where I can't even trigger the open process to find a file.

I've checked the files in question - all are good - and I opened/saved to the same location using different machines also running win10/o2016. This particular machine - my main one - isn't working.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled office, but I have a horror suspicion some key system file in win10 has corrupted somewhere.

Thoughts anyone?

So after a weekend of reverting back to a fresh WIndows build and reinstalling, the error recurred last night. In a fit of inspiration I exited Malwarebytes from running memory, and things are running again fine. Swiftly I might add.

What's got me thinking is the new anti-exploit features. Although it shouldn't interfere with a trusted app like Office... I wonder...

As well as or instead of?

Later: position seems to be that The Windows Defender feature is automatically disabled once you install the Norton product on your computer

MadEngineer:

After the update the onedrive app wouldn't sign into my microsoft account:

Microsoft OneDrive

You're syncing a different account

The account that you signed in with doesnt match the account that you're syncing.

Please provide the password for "".

To add another account, right-click the blue OneDrive cloud icon in the notification

area and click Settings. Click the Account tab, then click Add an account.

Updated my laptop and all is fine, other than this one issue. I don't use Onedrive so I'm not particularly bothered, but it's a bit messy.

we're working on some new apps that I can't quite talk about yet :)

Meanwhile WMM should still install and work, as far as I know.

Yes it does, I just downloaded and installed on a Windows 10 laptop two weeks ago to compile a photo tribute. Worked just fine :)

jonb: Tethered a laptop to a phone hotspot, set as metered immediately and it used 1GB in half an hour of Word.

What used the data?

Hi Nathan,  sorry for the late reply, have been travelling.  Logged in now on Wi-Fi and set to metered connection, and it is OneDrive using 20-50Mbps a second.

I think I did the Creators update before leaving NZ (partly to avoid data charges whilst away), and OneDrive has wanted to resync all folders again.  Left the home wifi to go away befo sync has finished and OneDrive doesn't recognise the metered connection setting and is busily downloading 10GB on metered connection.

What is the version of your OneDrive client? And you mean OneDrive not OneDrive for Business?

From memory, I think you can right click on the onedrive icon and choose 'pause sync'

That's interesting.  I started getting Excel crashing on save today (Creator, Office 365 home), and reinstalled (and lost all my icons), and updated Office, and it's still happening.  Can't do any work at all.  Now I am looking askance at Malwarebytes, and will report back.

And yes, turn Malware bytes off, and Excel works fine.  Time to tell MWB, I think.  Thanks, @antoniosk!
