Just installed the new Skype 6 and merged my Skype and Microsoft accounts. This means I can use IM to my Messenger contacts through Skype.

Great stuff. One less program starting when the laptop boots. One less program to worry about when updating things...

I for one welcome our new IM overlord...

Did the same thing myself yesterday. Certainly a move in the right direction I guess.

Was prompted (sort of forced, I guess) to merge my Skype account with my Microsoft account when I signed in to the new Windows 8 Skype app.

And a week after I post this it's official: Microsoft retiring Windows Live Messenger by Q1 2013.

I wonder how this'll work with apps such as Adium that connect to WLM but not Skype. I think I read that Skype now uses the WLM backend but does anyone know for sure?

I just downloaded Skype 6 but I can't see anywhere to merge with Messenger. What am I missing here?!

Lougout from Skype. When logging in again you can use your Windows account. It will then ask if you want to merge an existing Skype account to the Windows account.

I don't use messenger but I have found that skype is much less reliable than it was 1 year ago. ESPECIALLY that stupid click to call addon which is horribly unstable.

Add-on? You said "add-on"?

I disabled EVERY add-on, everywhere. I like my browsers clean, not hijacked, thanks.

I love that WP8 supports Skype so well. Will have to consider making use of this. I have been an IRC fan for so long now that all those animated emoticons and angsty teenagers scare me.

I've noticed that my old Skype account can still be used and in fact some Skype features require you login with the old account, for example the new Skype in Workplace.

I've migrated my Skype account over to my Microsoft account, but I find that I still have to use my old original Skype ID and password combo to log in to Skype for Android.

The Skype app on these platforms would need to be updated to allow MS accounts to be used to login into them. Windows 8 Skype app from store and Windows 7/8 desktop app have been updated to allow MS Accounts to be used to migrate both Skype and WLM and login with either.

Do whatever you want to do man.
