Hi All

I have just bought an Asus UX32VD from JB HIFI
http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/computers/asus/13-3-inch-ultrabook-sku-29255/

I got it home and turned it on and its all in Spanish.

A quick google search says only way to change it to English is to upgrade it to Ultimate.

I have tried to do a system recovery by pressing F9 at boot but it just keeps booting into Windows.

Any help would be much appreciated

Look for spanish classes in your town.

You should be able to use it after 2-3 months of lesson.

Yea I found the above link.

Its annoying that the Asus website and instruction manual say that if you press F9 you should be able to start factory restore but there isnt the option, or if it is I don't know enough Spanish to know what to press.

Its weird, I picked it up today, fully sealed factory box and inside was the fully sealed retail box, but when I turned it on it didn't go through the enter your name, select your region etc etc. It just booted up and it just says "r4g-pc"

JB HIFI swapped it for me for another new one.

Is there anyway to do a windows 7 destructive recovery and not have the OEM ASUS bloatware slipstreamed into it.

Theres probably 100+ processes running at the moment compared to my old laptop there probably no more than 50

Not very likely. One option is (1) download to usb stick all the drivers you will need for your model from Asus (2) Obtain or borrow an original microsoft Windows 7 install disk for the edition of windows you purchased and use your key to install it. (3) Install Asus drivers as needed for correct operation.

If you cannot borrow original media Microsoft Partner Dell has published a how to which includes links to download various editions from Microsoft's digital distribution service (digital river). Download will be large maybe around 4GB and you would be wise to find and verify MD5 before you burn it to DVD to avoid any issues resulting from file corruption during the large download.

Obviously if you try to install an edition which you did not purchase - that is not possible.

In the USA (not sure here) there are special laptop editions which OEMs install nothing but Windows and drivers. That should be the default, because the amount of crapware loaded onto PCs is incredible...

Update, I found this website before bought this laptop and plucked up the courage to actually do it last night.

Its 100x better than the standard setup out of the box

Start time is about 5 seconds and ready to use down from probably about 15-20 seconds to just the desktop and processes are now about 76 down from 100+.

I also found another website to optimize SSD performance and longevity.

Any tips to bring that 76 processes down further? I have a feeling that about 40-50 are Windows and the remaining 20~ are things such as offline USB charger, Nvidia/Intel switcher etc, even thou now that the OS and main apps are on the SSD I dont think performance is an issue anymore.

I usually spend time peering into msconfig if windows machines are slow but in future I will try the above and save time and effort. The removal list contains all the stuff I usually remove anyway so it will be just as good most of the time.

For windows, you can also find lists online of windows services which are not needed and set them to manual or disabled to win back some resources and speed up the startup process. Before you change the state of a windows service you should understand exactly what it does in case you need it again. Some software will assume the state of a service and fail when it cannot find it. Most of the time it is obvious and notified to the user but sometimes not.

I don't know if there is already a thread for this but I am wondering if I have a problem, or a quirk, or if it's common with all laptops.

This laptop has 3 x USB 3.0 ports on it. One by itself on the left hand side and 2 on the right hand side.

The issue is that the one by itself on the left doesn't recognize my (USB 2.0) or my brother in laws (USB 3.0) external USB powered portable hard drive. It seems to be able to handle everything else i.e mouse, charging and updating my phone, flash drives and it will connect to a portable USB hard drive with an external power supply.

The other 2 ports are sweet for what ever purpose I use them for.

I have called ASUS 0800 number and they say that it needs to be sent back for servicing.

No idea in this case but, not uncommon to get slightly different behavior from different ports. Not uncommon for front/back to be controlled by different chips. Older machines sometimes had 4x usb 1 and 2x usb 2 for instance. You could consider a post on the Asus support forum, and maybe compare the same model in store. It may save some time-wasting back and forth where you are deprived of a machine.
