Hi

Recently installed Win * Pro and everything going fine, steep learning curve, but getting there.  The only disappointment is that my Canoscan F3000 scanner doesn't work.  While it is old in computing terms it still works fantastically on XP, but I don't really have the space to keep two machines set up.

Does anyone know of a work around, or maybe someone using another driver to get this scanner going in 8?

Thanks

Can you find Windows 7 drivers for it? 32bit or 64bit from Canon's website? If so, just try installing that, if they still don't work, right click on the drivers and install them under Windows 7 compatibility mode? If they also don't work then you can try and install the Windows XP drivers under compatibility mode as well.

No - there's no drivers for Windows 7 either.

I don't understand the instructions about right clicking to install in compatibility mode.  Could you please elaborate a bit more. eg do I install the drivers from the CD of software and then go somewhere to find them and do the right click?  Or right click on them on the Canon page?

Thank you

I have an old (nine years old) Canon scanner here. I was going to put in the rubbish bin since the Canon drivers don't work on Windows 7 64 bit... Then I tried VueScan and the scanner is back alive.

Try it...

I found Vista 32 bit drivers from the official Cannon support page for this model. This is as far they have support for. No Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers. Below is the download link from my site for it. Try this and if this does not works then we can try the compatibility solution.

I tried XP SP3 compatibility mode but that didn't help.  Will try the other option and report back.

Thanks for your efforts.

I'm having an issue with the vuescan in that after download I double to install and get this error message:
C:\Program File\vuescan.exe can't be created possibly a file protection problem.  Delete the file and retry.

Syntax may not be quite correct ...

Anway I can't the file to delete it, so am stuck!

Canon are useless at backporting their drivers for older machines. They seem to only make drivers for new OS's for their newer machines. So if you have an old but otherwise good Canon device and you upgrade to the latest OS you're often screwed.

I've given up buying or recommending Canon equipment for this reason.

Yes - I've heard that before and it was the same with Linux and Canon and drivers.

Oh well will look at a new one I guess in a few months as maintaining two machines is a pain.

Just deleting the drivers in Device Manager and then just letting Windows install whatever drivers it finds (assuming it finds any) sometimes gives an unexpected good result.

As has been said, Canon is atrocious with updating drivers and especially so for 64 bit. What I have done in the past if the device is not used very frequently is install it in a virtual XP machine. I have done so in the past to get around the problem with device drivers even though a bit clunky.

However, I currently still have some important legacy software which rely on dongles and won't run on anything past XP - I had kept an XP machine for those in the past but have now found that Win 8 starts up so quickly that with XP in a virtual machine (I use VMWare Player, that choice just out of old habit) the total start up time is hardly more than starting XP alone on an XP dedicated PC and all seems to run very smoothly in contrast to earlier versions of Windows as hosts. So that's what I do now.

Si I install vmplayer and install XP into that?  Will Google and find out how to do it, as it sounds as though would solve the issue for me if I can get it sorted.

Try right clicking and run as administrator.

Okay that installed it  - now to see if it sees the Canoscan, as it's not currently.

Update:

vuescan installed but didn't see the Canon, so installed VMWare Player, and XP onto that.  I've used the scanner to scan a photo, and it was fine, will dig out some slides and try one of those.

I'm wondering if I will be able to import images directly into Elements and/or Lightroom.  will have a play.

Thanks again all.

Hopefully the last question.  Do I need to activate the Win XP?  It keeps asking.  If I do it means I won't be able to sell that machine with XP on it of course.

Thanks again.
