As far as I can tell Remote Desktop is not available with Win 7 Home Premium. Is this correct?

I am looking to be able to remote into a home PC running Win 7 Home Premium from 'the internet'. Any recommendations appreciated.

How about realvnc?

Or I think there are hacks to get remote desktop running on home premium.

Your right, not avaliable on home versions, I've used teamviewer, it seems to work ok

Teamviewer, Logmein.

There is a registry hack I believe to enable RDP on home premium.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I have seen those but are wary of them as one I looked at was broken by installing Win 7 SP1. I prefer to use something that is purpose-built such as realvnc as you suggest.

Give teamviewer a go, I've got it installed on 2 PC's my Galaxy S2 and Note 10.1 tablet.

It works both ways on the PC's, but on the Droids it only lets them control the PC's not the PC's control the Droids.

I beleive there is a iPhone/iPad version as well

Last time I tried vnc i found its not really compatible with windows vista onwards on service mode...
Maybe things have changed since then.

Ended up using the "termsrv patch" (those are the keywords you want) which worked well.

My only problem was last time i tried (couple of week back) it had stopped working for some reason (not updates, as i dont update this particular machine due to incompatibilities).

VNC solutions will need some firewall configuraiton or port forward in the router.

Get LogMein Free TeamViewer. No need to be "built-in". I use LogMeIn in all my PCs, in-laws' laptops and the paid version in all Geekzone servers.

Just my opinion but I find logmein and teamviewer okay for helping out folks at home but for regular access to remote servers, I find the lag and graphics rendition not up to scratch.

I regularly access remote Windows Server (in remote data centres) but accessing the server using SFTP (which is pretty secure) and then tunnelling RDP through SFTP. It provides a much better UI experience IMHO and traffic is direct (well at least it stays in NZ).

The problem the OP has is that the computer he wants as a server is a Windows 7 HOME system, home versions don't support server use, but you can RDP in to another server with home versions of windows

Yes there are registry hacks, but I never managed to find one that actually worked. So short of upgrading to a pro version of windows, teamviewer or logmein (or other similar programs) are the only alternative.

In the end I managed to get an upgrade to win 7 pro.

So I've got a server setup on my home PC, I can log in remotly via my phone or tablet and get what I need, i've also got teamviewer on our PC and the kids PC so we can check on what they are up to easily anytime

I am trialling Logmein. First impressions are good - easy to install and use. still to test remotely though - ie away from home. Many thanks to all.

But then you have the problem on a listening port while LogMein and TeamViewer are outgoing connections...
