How come new computers that can run the 64 bit version of Vista are shipped with the 32 bit version? Seems like a waste of hardware.

The reason why I'm asking is because I'm planning to buy a new PC, but I really would like to get it with a 64 bit version of Vista (Premium).

There are quite a few reasons; drivers being the biggest one. I'm not sure about OEM but with the retail version you can request the 64bit DVD from the MSFT website. Will cost about $20 incl shipping.

not with OEM. OEM is pretty much fix one OS to a hardware (in this case, the motherboard, usually).

As Brad mentioned, majorly driver issues, certain softwares.

Windows Vista x64 is available from OEM channels, but it isn't the default version that most OEMs ship (yet)

So you need to ask for it if you want it

So if I get the Ultimate OEM version of Vista with a new system will they ship both OEM versions?

Only Ultimate retail comes with 32 and 64 bit DVDs. But I'm sure you can request the 64 bit DVD for OEM as well.

There is a link in a thread I created a while back on Vista. Check the windows forum for it. Should tell you on that page it links to whether OEM is included in the alternate media thing.
