OK have a fairly grunty PC with 3 1TB HDD's, but with Vista Embarassed Ultimate installed.  It's slowly becoming a dog I think due in part to all the program installs etc.

I had originally set it up as much as possible to have Windows & programs on drive C & most data on 2nd drive & video files on 3rd drive.  Did this for backup and performance reasons.  I actually have 1st & 2nd drive partitioned so that I could run a MS data backup daily to the 2nd partition on drive C and a more program/system backup from C drive to the 2nd partition of the 2nd drive.  Actually, don't think that worked that well with one? of the backups as MS backup insists on including drive C with the backup anyway?.  Need a NAS I know Cry, but can't really afford that quite yet.

It seems that when I did this Windows etc didn't really like doing this purely.  eg  Still had problems with other software looking for Pictures in drive C.  Ended up trying some program from somewhere that set all the registry changes etc but a bit ugly, security seemed a bit weird etc.  This could be my main problem, don't know.

Windows is reporting it isn't able to run updates for a few months...so I really should rebuild it, but it's just that it will take about 3 days work Surprised to install & configure everything how I like it etc, I am a software developer (database type stuff), but bit of a noob when it comes to low level things, networking etc.

Should I just stay with Vista or go for Windows 7 or 8?  (I'm thinking 7 for now if I change particularly as I am a heavily use Office 2003 which it isn't compatible with).

Any tips, help on best way to set up my drives with a clean install much appreciated.

there are a few issues

1) when you partition a drive and want to access both partitions the drive heads have to move back and forth and this will slow down your access time at least 2X - sounds like you have put stuff you need to access constantly, on both partitions of one drive so that is at least part of why things are so bloody slow

2) if you want to partition, that's fine but make sure both partitions don't need to be constantly accessed - don't forget virus scanning, defragging and all those "windows background tasks"

3) i'd go windows 8. at least windows 7 but not vista. no way. but it's up to you

4) have you excluded malware? do you have enough RAM?

Upgrade to windows 7. I absolutely hate the 8 layout. Consider Windows 8 if you don't mind finding programs to bring back the start menu and reassigning a bunch of default applications. You'll also need to find a way to auto log into the default home screen and occasionally deal with the awful metro screen. The only improvements I've noticed are a slightly upgraded file transfer menu and faster boot times. I really don't care about either of those.

As for backups, I found an awesome (Microsoft created) product a while back called SyncToy. Lightweight, reasonably quick, and only backs up files which have been modified. You just need to set up a scheduled task to run it at whatever interval you like. But something to consider is that Microsoft is offering a kind of striped (RAID 5) backup option in W8. I wouldn't trust it but it's worth noting.

Having partitions on drives like you do is a bad idea. you're presumably just backing up or mirroring data from one partition or drive onto onto the same drive which will simply bring things to a crawl.

Thanks for suggestions, but "sounds like you have put stuff you need to access constantly" - nah, they are both just for backups, but good point about background tasks etc. It ran hot when first setup, slowly getting worse I think (you start to think your imagining it)...yes must check for malware.

Have you thought about a small SSD (120g) for the OS?

Don't think I'll partition again, but currently/in the past I run daily from drive E: (pretty much all my data) to O:. And now and then a complete system backup from C: to M:. so it's crossing physical drives.

Upgrading to 8 now does not make sense considering Microsoft was almost giving it away or next to nothing when it was launched

Good idea I guess, thanks....would 60GB do?  Do you mean for programs as well the OS?  Should I separate these as well so have OS, programs & data all different drives, is this easy to do without problems?

ps I should change my Avator I'm thinking now it looks hideous.

Hey all worked good thanks for the help...using a SSD is great, so much faster. Didn't partition any other drives just to be sure no problems. Windows 7 Professional used. Just the fact I have a clean install helped I'm sure too. Interestingly the Citrix remote sessions I have with a Client a hugely faster too.

"backup" to the same physical drive is't a backup.

If the hard drive dies everything goes...
