Sons laptop been running fine for 5 months + since new.  It's running a Windows 8 factory install.

He powered it up last night, logged into his main account  and the machine then went through the process of setting itself up as if new. Took about 15 minutes to set everything up again.

I think its actually 'refreshed' as there is also a folder of Apps, Games, Virus checkers and various bits and bobs of software it cleaned out.  It went right back to Day 1 state with all the " free for 2 months"  features reloaded onto the machine - Norton etc.

I had created a recovery disc on an external HDD  but can't seem to boot from it under the advanced startup options so am in process of re-installing for him.

Any clues as to why it did this/ what could cause this or is it simply one of those mysterious Windows 8 things.

Cheers for your thoughts

Could someone have imitated a PC Reset from the control panel?

Yeah, it sounds like someone pressed F12 during bootup (and maybe hasn't told you that's what he did...)

I used to see it a little bit when I was a mobile technician - lots of people won't admit that's what they have done.

So I'm curious, is there any way of proving things like this. Clearly most/all logs will be destroyed by the restore process.
Is there any low level logging or something like that.

If it was a reset you'd have no user accounts as the Windows OOBE setup would run to ask you to create them

Push-button reset reboots the PC into the new operating system.

Windows starts the Out of Box Experience (OOBE).

He swears blind he didnt do anything other than input his username. .

Given him the benefit of the doubt and knowing him well i believe he didnz't work through any prompts etc. Could he have initiated this doing anything else. I didnt know about f12 for example.

He opened up the laptop shellcase, stuck in his login and off it went apparently. He brought it through to me as it was doing the refresh
