I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 installed on a HP Microserver at home. I wondered about installing the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Experience role, mainly for the features related to remote file access.

I understand I can deploy the role on a Workgroup server, but from reading here I have the impression installing Windows Server 2012 Essentials Experience role will also install AD in my server?

Is that right? Any comments or experience from someone who's done that?

Yes, Essentials Experience requires itself to be a DC in an active directory domain. That said, you can use most of the features without having to join your clients to the domain, and the Essentials dashboard simplifies AD management a lot. Essentials is the 2012 rebrand of Small Business Server.
