Hi Folks,
Does anyone know how to use the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client on the IPhone to connect to a Surface Pro (win 8.1) while the latter is (WiFi/BT) tethered to the IPhone?

Have been trying but keep getting host unreachable.  Just trying to find out if it is possible.

Over the lan (possibly wifi->router) no problem.
Over the internet through the phones 3g connection, you need to open a port in your router firewall, which is 'dodgy' (but easy-ish if you're techie).

The proper way is to make the phone to connect to your vpn.

Hrm. Interesting question, Ive ben re-reading your post.

Probably the phone isolates itself from the subnet of the "personal hotspot" network. I cant imagine Apple letting the router expose the phone to the same local subnet as its hotspot clients. Maybe a hacked version like cydia _could_. Or else you'd need an app created for this purpose.

can I ask what the use case is for your scenario?

Is the Surface Pro is within WLAN range, why don't you just walk over to it?

I'd test this myself but I don't have an iPhone

*doh*  configuring firewall and turning on remote desktop on surface would help :)

Needed to use IP address as  it didn't see the host name.

I must say, typing on a surface pro keyboard via an IPad screen is a bit weird.

Well, actually, surface pro is on the other side of my desk.  However, I might have been over by the coffee machine.

Actually, I just wanted to try out the new remote desktop app for IOS and this was probably the most complex scenario I could think of at the time.  However, when out and about there is a likelihood that one might use an IPad to remote into a surface pro that is tethered to an iPhone.

Splashtop?

Can only imagine how horrible RDP must be on the iPhone though with that low res tiny screen.

IMO the new MS Remote Desktop app is terrible.  They gutted everything good about iTap, and the zoom functionality is ridiculously unintuitive.
