Hi Folks,
Just trying to resolve a couple of Windows 8.1 issues

I use Bing translate quite a  bit and had a number of additional languages installed (NZ, Japanese, French and UK English - in that order) on my surface pro. When I go to the start menu, the left column of icons is in English, the centre column is in Japanese and the right column is in French.   I have tried uninstalling the languages, but it remains rather odd. Have checked every language setting I can find  and everything is set to NZ (also normal desktop is fine).

Next one is in IE11 I am getting a 'Lync Browser Helper' is incompatible message from time to time - it is a plugin and I do not seem to be able to uninstall it.  I have never had Lync installed on the machine.

Finally, I am trying to copy some large files (4+gb) that have duplicate filenames.  8.1 now doesn't check for the duplicate until the second file starts to copy which means I don't see the dialog asking what to do until several hours later - apparently this is considered an improvement.  I am wondering if there is a registry setting that I can implement which forces it to always copy both files (and sort out the duplicate name - as if I select both checkboxes).   This used to work in Windows 7 just fine.

Also, in the large file copy, sometimes it goes to sleep half way through and I need to reboot (as the target file remains locked).  Am wondering if anyone else has been encountering this.

Regards
TwoSeven.

For language, go to control panel -> language, then uninstall all languages except for NZ English.
Then on the side click advanced settings and check that all those settings are set to NZ English, and under override for Windows display language click the link then hit copy settings and also change system locale to NZ English.

For the lync issue go to control panel -> programs and features, then look for anything to do with lync and uninstall it if you don't want it.

As for the sleeping problem, my computer does that but only when idle, it's weird though because it's a desktop and doesn't need to, though I don't mind.

Tried the languages thing - all uninstalled + language packs. Still getting mixed languages.

Lync not showing in programs and features (it appears to get installed with Office 365 - on other machine am not getting this issue).

By sleep I don't mean hypernate, I mean the copy becomes unresponsive (I can see what looks like a ping on the network, but no data is being transferred).

Update: Removed all languages, cleared the start menu cache (seem to have lost that menu for now), and then rebooted the machine. When I cleared the cache, everything went back to NZ English.

Lync is installed as part of Office 2013 (via Office 365 in this case). You can disable the add-in in internet explorer by going to the settings menu and choosing "manage add-ons".
