New PC (ASUS Z87-A, Haswell i7-4771, c: = 960GB Crucial M500 SSD, d: = 4TB Seagate HD).  Avast antivirus

Win 8 upgraded to 8.1 ~two(?) weeks ago.  All worked fine.

Auto update this morning & after rebooting neither keyboard nor mouse work.  Seems USB not working in Windows (does work in BIOS, though does not seem to be anything can do from there).

Can find nothing on web about this problem.

Seems not possible to access 'Safe Mode' in Win 8 without keyboard control.

Attempt to revert to restore to 10 Nov restore point failed.  Hoping to avoid trying 31 Oct restore point as a lot of software has been loaded since then.

Any suggestions?

Anyone else had similar experience

One thing I forgot to mention that the PC boots to the Lock Screen, but without keyboard access cannot get past there.

Second issue is that, while at the Lock Screen, we can gain access to ALL of C: DRIVE over the network from another PC using GoodSync Explorer (!!! Great security eh?).  Windows Explorer will of course not open c: on a network PC.

1. Is it possible to to overwrite the USB drivers over the network?
2. Will it make any difference?

OK may be almost there.  Found an old PS2 keyboard buried in a cupboard, attached that & rebooted.  Have now got past the Lock Screen using that (all thanks to son).  So now in Windows though still no mouse.  Trying to see if can update the USB driver, though not making rapid progress.

I had that issue about a week ago, when I moved my keyboard and mouse to a different usb port they worked.

In the device manager there was one usb port with a yellow exclamation mark through it, removing the device and letting it detect again didn't help.

However after rebooting at least twice Win 8.1 eventually finished installing whatever updates it had and all came right.

We tried several USB ports (2 & 3) and could not get mouse or keyboard to work on any of them. We also tried re-booting multiple times.

Now that are in using the PS2 keyboard (+ keyboard accessibility 'mouse') can see that 4 updates failed but they are all security update type, so not certain if they are the cause.

We have now just tentatively fixed the problem. Following your suggestion we uninstalled the USB driver in Device Manager, then did a search for hardware changes. 'Fixed' the problem immediately (mouse & USB keyboard working). Have now re-booted and all seems fine.

One thing that does come out of this - it has been an object lesson in not throwing everything out as soon as finished with it (at last I now have a counter to hoarding accusations).

Have no idea how we would have recovered without the PS2 keyboard short reinstall or refresh of Windows.
