Hi All,

I'm producing a small access and word powered application for a training company at present.

I need to get Access and Word for the machine but I can't figure out where to go to figure out what I need to pay and what license I need.

I assume as they're an academic provider that they will get academic pricing.

Is the MS guy about?  I can even figure out what number to call to talk to someone to get some help.

Your educational institution needs to give you an email address at an approved domain.

Eg. if you are in hawkes bay and go to the Eastern institute of technology, you qualify because EIT give you an @eit.ac.nz address which is on the approved list of domains.
This is where microsoft send the activation code

Thanks Ray.

I bounced a few messages with Nathan too.  He made some good suggestions too.

He did make one very interesting observation.  He looked at my clients web site and commented that they look like a 'for profit' company, which I guess they are.

But so are training providers such as universities and the like.  Any one who suggests that a university isn't as much about profit as a small training provider is just being silly in my view.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to go bashing on Microsofts door about this issue.  I was just asking the question to make sure I'm getting the best value for my client as appropriate by the offers made by this specific software vendor.

Best choice in this case looks like it might be an office 365 month by month license for now.

If price is the main driver, PB Tech are selling Office 365 Home Premium for 99incl GST tomorrow

Since the customer is in Australia, maybe you can even claim back the GST when you export it

This sounds fantastic, but I can't find it on the site.

If anyone can see this it would be helpful.

Ta :)

Just as a little FYI/BTW... "price" is a "driver", but just knowing what I'm meant to order was the real driver.  I just don't want to be accused later of not looking after the customer.  One of the reasons I choose Open Source Free Software (as often as I can) is I don't get bitten in the butt for getting it wrong as far as the wrong license.  There is nothing worse than having someone say "Oh if you'd just told me and chosen this... you could have saved X$ percent".  In the case of this project, I was looking at using MySQL as the database, but MS Access is simply a much better technology choice.

On that note, I would like to yet again express a note of thanks to Nathan.  This is NOT his area within the company he works for.  This NOT his responsibility to sort out, but he does these things with grace and a great deal of tolerance.  Thanks mate :)

...oh and for those that think this is a bit 'brown nosing'... you're quite right...  it's me taking the time to thank someone for taking time to help another fellow geek and IT would be a whole lot more fun for me if everyone took a bit more time each day to say thanks :) :) :)

Hi All,

The follow up to this is that I talked to Will at PB Tech.

The price Nathan talked about is for software on sale in store this afternoon from 5pm in Auckland stores.

Software is also going to be on sale on their web site on Monday.

I also found out the the MS rules have changed again. It is now possible to purchase a 'retail copy' of the software that can be installed on as many machines as needed and the license travels to the machine... ie If I am prototyping on one machine, then want to put my license onto the other machine once I'm done developing, to hand over to the customer, I can now do that. This is great news!!!
