We have recently had a laptop fail due to software corruption that required the hard drive to be completely reformatted.

I recovered the Product Key, downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 Home Edition (origianl disk lost and gone), and started reinstalling the O/S.

Installation ran fine until I tried to Activate, and keep getting an error code and message "Licence evaluation failed".

System information returns the correct Product ID data, but don't know why the Activation fails when using the oriiginal/genuine Product Key.

Can anyone shed light on this please, or suggest solution?

did you key in your own license key at some point in the process? if not try running "slui.exe 0x3" from a run or command prompt.

otherwise check out this old article for possible solutions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950755

if you still have no luck, you can try activation over the phone - run "slui.exe 0x4" from a command prompt or run dialog and follow the instructions

Regs .... I think the O/S was loaded from the retail store, and never been re-entered again anywhere to my knowledge.

I notice that there are two versions of Win7 iso (both x64) so will try the other one just in case ... I read somewhere that OEM installs sometimes fail with one or the other.

Failing that, anyone know the Microsoft activation telephone number for here in NZ?

good luck with phone activation. I love Windows but due to activations thinking of switching to linux.
Its no problem when sorted but with my windows 8, i rang the number then have to put the numbers in and that fails so eventually goes to person who you cannot understand at all so hang up and go through process again until you get someone who does speak reasonable english. No where did it give me chance to go straight to a person. Once I ended up doing it by email and I cant praise them enough for that, but not sure if thats normal option.

Yeah you need the exact version of Windows for your particular key.

I never had to call Phone Activation but from what I read here and other people told me, it is a painless process.

Never had a phone activation go wrong yet, it is normally very painless. Just make sure you have the correct key installed first and then do the activation.

yeah I have correct key and then ring the number. Windows 8 gave 2 numbers and rang both bit still had to put the 50 odd numbers in then when that failed I could talk to a person. Sometimes you have to do it a few times before you get someone you can understand what they say. i really wouldnt mind so much if I could understand what the person on the other end was saying. The one I couldnt understand at all and I said is there someone who speaks english and I did understand her when she said the word english but couldnt understand any other words she said.
So each time I tried I had to re type all those numbers before I could get to a human.

UPDATE: Spoke to MS and they confirmed that the Product Key is genuine, BUT would not activate it and I needed to contact the computer manufacturer.

This, purportedly, because the install was under an OEM SLP licence. However, cannot get anywhere using HP's NZ telephone numbers ... they only seem to want to talk to people with goods under Warranty!

This seems all rather silly since the Product Key IS genuine, nothing dodgy, and all originally paid for.

Any suggestions folks? Anyone from Compaq/HP here on GZ?
