Recently i have purchased a new PC running VISTA (Dual 2.13ghz processor, 2 gig's ram etc - good gaming PC). Anyway i had a lapse of concentration and didnt install anti virus - downloaded a program (AnyDVD from a torrent web site) and ever since have had the following issue:

Everytime my PC has an active internet connection it comes up with this error "Services & Controller App has stopped working & needs to close" then i get an error saying "your PC has encounted a critical error & needs to restart in 1 minute". The odd thing is if i dont plug in my wireless USB reciever it doesnt happen - only when the internet cnnection goes live. Every re-boot it does it again - so basically if i start my PC i get 2-3 minutes then it restarts unless i un-plug my Wireless USB Reciever.

I installed AVG anti virus and found these:
Tojan horse backdoor.generic3.vwp
Tojan horse backdoor.generic7.ltf
Trojan Horse Backdoor.Hupigon2.JKD
Trojan horse Hider.Y
Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic3.SZP

AVG has put them into the virus Vault but i still get the error and have to re-boot!!

HELP!

It looks like it's more than one - usually it causes lots of trouble removing more than one infection...

Agree with the above post. If you don't want to go there just yet, here are some other scanners you could use (since your AVG is an AV, not an AS or anti-trojan)

http://www.emsisoft.it/it/software/download/
http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html

and this last is a standalone AV, (no installation, no updater, run from the download location.)

http://download.drweb.com/drweb+cureit/

It has pretty good heuristics, so (as with all of them) be careful of FPs.

The reason you are getting these problems when trying to connect to the internet is that you have a trojan. These are indeed nasty. Major privacy issue.

I suggest you change any passwords used for forums etc, but most especially for banking, etc if you do that on line. And keep an eye on your bank account (if applicable.) If this is a factor, it would be wise to contact the bank, and notify them you may have been a victim of identity theft.

Configure your firewall to block unknown outbound connections. I think the vista firewall does this. If not, get one that does.
Malware has gone from being a hobby of geek-vandals to being big business. Siphoning from credit/bank accounts is where a lot of the attacks are aimed, these days. Sorry if that's scary, but it's actually got to the point where some banks will not cover losses if the user PC doesn't have up to date security software installed.

Oh God, what've I done to it now??

Thanks for the ideas!

I've since removed AVG and tried the Stinger tool from McAfee - no luck, then installed AVAST Anti virus and it did a boot scan - found nothing.

Ive backed all my files up to a second Hard disk so im ready to format if needed - ill try the tools you suggested and let you know if it's all good.

You've got me worried about my banking stuff now as i do everything online!

Ill call my bank.

Jared

Another free AV is Avira Antivir Personal Edition Classic. It rates higher than Norton's, AVG and Avast, etc in OCT 07 PC Authority mag.  Link is www.free-av.com.  Good luck

Make sure you install a ridiculously-paranoid amount of anti-virus BEFORE restoring your backed-up files. Definitely a lot tighter security than is normally reasonable to run.
