HI,
My autoupdate is set but has stopped working
I can't even load the updates automatically
I keep getting this error message listed above
I googled it and apparently this is a problem
any one know how to fix it?
it says windows could not search for new updates and then has this error code, but it is not listed in windows help section

Are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista?

There is a KB on Microsoft.com about error 80073712.

I followed the directions from the link above
I entered the command in cmd reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty
and this is the response I got
ERROR: "The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value."
Hmmm...

Did you make sure that you have admin rights?

And you need to type in the below..

reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty

...do not include cmd at the beginning of that.

cmd only needs to be used to open the 'command prompt' window.

Hi yes,
I typed it exactly as you did and I only typed cmd to get the the command prompt and yes I had admin rights.
