Hey all

I have just purchased a new SSD, and have applied a fresh install of Windows 7, using a HDD as storage.

It's great - really quick, etc etc.

But - if I restart the PC it hangs on the "Starting Windows" screen. Doesn't go further even after half an hour or so. The drive light flashes regularly, not like it's doing anything at all.

However, if I shut down instead of restart, and power up again, it starts perfectly fine!

The only thought I have is maybe the SSD shutting down faster and restarts before the HDD has had time to wind down is causing the issue? No idea really how those kinds of things work though...

Computers are weird. Windows 7 is old. Try the W10 technical preview, it works well. Having said that I used W7 on my custom built PC with two SSDs and four hard drives and never had a problem. Check/update your drivers.

Sometimes I have issues with 'hybrid sleep' in your windows power plan, try go into your power plan and advanced settings and see if hybrid sleep is enabled. Disable it if so and try then.

Thanks - I'll try that when I get home tonight

I have similar issue but mainly after a Windows Update has installed.... installs, reboots, then freezes on the Windows logo. Hit reset and it starts fine and no issues with the updates.

Im using a Corsair SSD - whats yours ?

It's an Adata - and yes, it quite probably coincides with a Windows update (there were a ton of them). Problem is it isn't resolving itself - multiple full shut down/startups and it still fails when trying to restart.

Probably a driver/device issue. You can step boot to confirm.

There was a bad windows update that was causing this.

Have you tried a system restore to back before this started happening?

I believe the update has been pulled it was caused by KB3001652.

It may have been this causing it?

If you can bot into safe mode you can try system restore as above and removing the Microsoft TAP adaptors from device manager is also a common fix for this sort of thing.

Yeah nah - for some reason my system restores are dropping off - the only one I have is from this afternoon, and I started having these issues last evening.

Turns out it is due to Catalyst drivers, possibly conflicting with one or more Windows updates (although I'm not sure about this relationship).

See this: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU-141002.aspx)

Their "resolution" doesn't work - not that I have much faith in it anyway, due to the fact it says to enter Safe mode and uninstall the old drivers and install the provided ones: drivers cannot be installed while in Safe mode.

Nothing I do fixed it, regardless of what version of driver I install. So I don't know - wait until AMD release a problem free update and/or the zombie flying pig apocalypse strikes?

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers in Safe mode and making sure they are deleted using a driver cleaner, then rebooting as normal and installing the recommended driver? The clean should mean it won't try and install the corrupt driver.

Does this version of windows have a rollback button in the driver tab?

Yes, tried that. Complete clean install of "right" driver. No joy.

if you want to follow that path then google "ati uninstall". I have done this in the past (for unrelated issues) but forget exactly which method i used. There is more than one 3rd party solution.

Personally I would want to be sure it is hanging on the driver, but I think now you have started based on that assumption it is a good idea to complete that.

For unrelated issues I have sometimes found only the ati driver that came with the system originally is trouble free.

Also check you windows update so settings do not automatically reinstall the WU driver.
