Been looking at a storage solution for quite awhile, and have decided I would like to try building something myself, windows storage spaces along with the ReFS files system seems like a good place start, any one had some experience setting something up like this?

I'd be using it for two main things, storage of non-critical data like movies and music etc, and as a place to keep regular backups of important data.

My main question is what do I need software wise, I think i'm pretty set when it comes to hardware. Can I do this with a standard Windows 8/10 licenses, or do I need something like Windows Server Essentials, and is it fairly easy to set up?

Is there a way to set up so data can be easily accessed over the internet? (not something I need, but wouldn't mind having it)

I have a customer who put reFS in his essentials server and had nothing but troubles (Corrupted Files, Missing Files, and broken Security Descriptors), when he came to us for help, we switched him to NTFS and he hasn't had an issue since.

It's only one example and I am sure there are happy people using it out there but I wouldn't personally take that risk.
