Since my problems last week I have had a new motherboard put in my computer... I actually can't notice the difference but I guess there is one.

However, I have a same problem as I had prior to the motherboard going in. I have a lot of digital graphic files and photos on my Seagate Portable harddrive. I have PLENTY of space and memory. But I have this annoying problem.

When I go to Windows Explorer to look at my photos/graphics - the folders I have set up look fine - you can see clearly what is within in them... but when I go to open the folder it initially looks like there is nothing in them, then after a few seconds a photo 'drops in', then it takes ages for all the others to 'drop in'. The thumbnails are all extremely small and unclear (pixelated?) unless you click on them to bring them up larger on the screen. All images/photos are taken on the same camera, same time, all approx same size. I do notice that sometimes the bottom ones on the page have come up ok but the rest are useless.

This is a major aggravation to me - I use these files all the time.  I also can't use the mouse to do anything else while they are dropping onto the screen.

Grateful for any of your expert help

Thank You
Donna

If you have lots of image files Windows will take some time to create the thumbnails.

If you are using an external drive, make sure it is actually using a USB 2.0 port for sped reasons. Also, you might want to go to Device Manager, find the Hard Drive list and check the option to enhance performance - otherwise Windows will be constatly writing to disc as it builds the thumbnails.

Also, make sure Windows is creating a file called thumbs.db... If it is not then it will create thumbnails every time you open the folder. Check in Tools | Folder Options on File Explorer for this.

Make sure you don't have a large amount of files in a single folder. Perhaps separating those files by year and month to make folders smaller?

Given you have had the motherboard replaced was this done before or after the 9600 graphics card install? This graphics card is an AGP slot card. AGP is obsolete. All modern motherboards provide PCI-E 16x slots for graphics cards or have onboard graphics chipsets.

Did you ever manage to get the 9600 driver updated??

What were the exact symptoms experienced before recommmendation of a motherboard upgrade???

I had lots and lots of intermittent things happening with my computer that couldn't be explained... and because my graphics card, and other components are new (graphics card purchased at Christmas and was replaced because it failed just a couple of months ago), he thought it was probably my motherboard as it was getting old. So that was replaced yesterday - AFTER my graphics card (9200) driver update. The motherboard I got was one that is compatible with everything else in my computer. It is new.

He has suggested it is my harddrive so I am going to go and buy one today - I will have a completely new computer by then!!!!!

I have just noticed that if I look at my photos etc thumbnails through Windows Explorer that if I hit the "refresh" button they come up properly, but are still slow to drop in.

I have done the Enhance option but am not sure about the thumbs.db. I have been to Tools/Folder Options/View, but am not sure if I should select "Do not cache thumbnails" - that seems the only selection referring to anything about thumbnails

I would be very cautious and NOT jump to conclusions on the advice of someone who has replaced your motherboard and NOT solved the problem.

A new hard drive has no operating system installed. To clone your current hard drive to the new drive and have it boot requires third party software and a repair install of XP. Not for absolute beginners.

So the 9200 graphics card driver now runs your 22" monitor at 1680 x 1050??

My monitor now is fine - on the correct resolution.

A new hard drive has no operating system installed. To clone your current hard drive to the new drive and have it boot requires third party software and the knowledge to correct some issues created by the drive geometry changing. Not for absolute beginners.

He says that he may use a transfer wizard (or something like that) to transfer the data from my current drive. He has built computers for a business and fixes computers all the time. Obviously it may have been that my motherboard didn't need replacing and I do realise that "if that doesn't work - lets try something else" may be the approach..... but I don't know the answers and it can be so frustrating. I am good at software problems etc but not the hardware parts.

The weird thing is that it was all fine until about a month ago.  I have had intermittent problems for a while e.g. won't shut down and have to pull the plug - and then one day it will come right again and shuts down normally for a while. Today it is not shutting down again.

My computer is a real work horse - but I think I have all the hardware installed to cope with everything.

So do you think I should still hold off with the harddrive?

Now I have some yellow shading on my screen - behind the words "contacts" & "inbox" in OE and between some icons on different screens - these are the sort of intermittent things that are happening. -This happened before I had the new motherboard in too.

Manuafacturer diagnostics should at least be run on the hard drive before replacing. You may also have another faulty device on the IDE channels, i.e., a CDROM drive, causing issues. Assume nothing, eliminate and test everything.

If it is replaced then go for SATA or SATA2 hard drive assuming your motherboard supports it.

You need to also check in Task Manager/Performance Tab that the "Commit charge" is always less than the "Physical Memory". If not upgrade RAM.
