Windows 8.1 tablet with all updates - Closing metro apps. So I'm using in finger tablet mode almost for the first time. Keep getting in difficult to close situations with metro app splashscreens.

If I use gestures to return to 'desktop' and touch on the taskbar and close that works but that's a lot of steps. Is there an easier way?

Swiping the App up? Does that still go in 8.1?

When swiping down, you need to hold the app close to  the bottom of the screen for a few seconds until it flips over, which will completely shut the app down.

Yes this

But you don't really need to shutdown the apps, Windows handles the suspension of this itself when it needs to.

If an app is having a problem, and you do the shut down gesture to get rid if app, then start the same app up again, Windows will close it and relaunch.

BTW its not Metro, or WinRT, or Windows Store apps or Modern apps or Universal apps

The go forward name is now Windows apps. Win32 programs are programs :)

You also don't need to switch to the app to close it. Just pull it out from the left (whatever that bar is called) and straight to the bottom.

Other tips for 8.1 touch:
In apps swiping up from the bottom opens various option bars (IE its the address bar etc), swiping down from the top does the same thing. Very handy if you have a keyboard attached that obscures the bottom edge.

Swiping from the right opens the charms bar, the settings option opens the settings for the current app.

That totally works for me. I note there are some variations in app state or behaviour. Some require the flip and some don't.
