Hotmail is the "legacy" branding - I use Outlook.com but sign in with a @hotmail address.

If having another email account is not important you can create a Microsoft account with any email, i created mine with my Gmail address, you can sync the mail app to your existing (non MS) email or just use webmail/other apps etc

I used to use the @hotmail but upgraded /transferred to @outlook it may be coincidental or better management by MS but I do not get the spam I used to get at @Hotmail in fact I get next to zero spam.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It does have a reasonably effective spam checker with one quite nasty feature - It can't be turned off.

I download all mail to my local PC using Thunderbird. I found I was missing emails at times. I tracked it down to the spam filter. Hotmail/Outlook was putting valid emails in the spam folder at times.

The only way around it was to make a rule to pass everything to the inbox before the spam checker got hold of it.
