I have been looking for a better browser since Opera jumped over the cliff. I have tried modern Opera iterations, as well as Chrome and Torch and other variations, but I don’t like any of them for various reasons (and I also don’t like Firefox). The only browser that pushes all my buttons is Opera 12 but this has become increasingly unusable with modern web sites.

Now I have just discovered Slimjet and it seems to be everything Opera 12 used to be, except on a modern Chrome-based chassis. It is flexible, highly configurable, easy to use, everything Chrome and modern Opera are not.

So is this truly the browser of my dreams? I would be curious to know what others think of it.

I can't speak for Google Chrome, which I don't like anyway, but I have Slimjet running on 32-bit Win7 and even XP, the latter on a fairly old, low spec desktop with limited RAM and I haven't noticed any performance issues at all. Everything just works, very smoothly. I am still very impressed with this browser.

I must say I'm in the same boat with you. The new opera is bad. It keeps crashing on my desktop.

Intensive memory usage is not very important when you have a machine with 24GB memory.

I didn't have any problem with Opera crashing, just the way everything that was good about version 12 has been discarded. First I couldn't change the default search engine to the one I wanted. Then I couldn't get rid of that awful Google bar until I performed some idiotic left left up up in out right down dance that the Opera designers seemed to think was necessary or amusing. Has that browser been taken over by monkeys? After all that and seeing how completely inflexible the new Opera was compared to the old, I embarked on a desperate search for something, anything, better and I immediately stumbled on to Slimjet. What a breath of fresh air! I can configure it almost any way I want, instead of the way some retarded simian thinks I should have it. The spirit of Opera 12 does live on, and Slimjet is the name. It comes closer than anything I have seen so far to putting control back into the hands of the user, instead of this ridiculous Chrome obsession with reducing everything to a single button and no configurability.

Apart from all that, I have nowhere near 24 gigs of memory and Slimjet still works like a dream for me. I highly recommend it to anyone else fed up with Google's vision of the world.

If you don't mind playing around with feature-incomplete (but usable) betas, you could always try Vivaldi.

So far I'm still so pleased with Slimjet that I don't feel a need to look any further.

Chrome uses a fair bit of memory, but I have a lot of memory so it really makes little difference.
