Has anybody successfully managed to use the screen mirroring feature on the Roku 3 with the Surface Pro 3? (Or probably any Windows 8.1 device)

I read the online guides on how to do it, "screen mirroring (beta)" is enabled on the Roku, and the SP3 detects it as a device. But once the SP3 says it's connected, a message says to follow the instructions on the Roku, but the Roku just sits there un-fazed, nothing to show that I've connected to it or even that something is trying to connect.

Other than buying a miracast adaptor, or mini-display to HDMI cable, I think this is my only option to connect to my >5year old TV

I had very little luck with it - sometimes managed to work briefly, but quality of connection was terrible.

To be honest I wouldn't bother. HDMI cable will be your easiest option unfortunately.

What are you trying to do with it? The Roku has a media player app to watch movies that you can share from Windows with the Media Library stuff (Roku Media player I think?)

Otherwise a chromecast can accept casted chrome windows if you want to do browser stuff, but again quality is average over wifi.

works fine for me

Do you have the latest patches for Roku and the latest Surface Pro 3 firmware from Windows Update?

I have used my Nokia Lumia 1520, Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch and Surface 2 with miracast on 2 of my Roku 3 without any issues. Use it all the time actually to show videos, web streams etc.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I wasn't trying to do anything specifically, just test out the screen mirroring feature in general. If I can get it to work, i'll probably try to run Lightbox in the browser and then mirror it to the TV screen to watch, not yet sure what other uses i'll have for it.

Chrome and chromecast might be my next option, but isn't there an issue, or soon to be an issue with Chrome/Silverlight/Lightbox?

Definitely have the latest patches for the Roku, and would assume I do for the SP3 as I regularly install updates, but having trouble checking as "windows update" won't load! I click to open it, and the window is there but stays blank and is frozen (won't let me close or minimize it even). Tried the usual trick of restarting the system, but still hangs

Thanks for the suggestion, but "troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

in your WU update history do you see

“System Firmware Update – 10/03/2015” or “System Hardware Update – 10/03/2015”

if not, what date do you see?

Tried that, just get the same problem. Hangs with blue loading circle, can't do anything with the window. Didn't realise I had such an issue with windows update, has now become more of an issue than my original post!

This is as far as I can get..

Funny you mention that, have "shut down" and turned back on about three times since starting this discussion this morning. For some reason this time i decided to "restart", and now it's applying a system update.. maybe WU was hanging because it was trying to download the update on the very slow connection I have at work? Either way, obviously have an updated setup now to try with the Roku again when I get home.

Will update with progress. Thanks

WU working now, not home to test with Roku until later, but the latest firmware update I have is 26/3/2015. Clicking check for updates comes up with nothing

Still doesn't work. SP3 recognises the Roku, I click on it and it says it's connecting, along with something like "follow the instructions on your device", but nothing happens on the Roku. Just sits on the home screen. Am I meant to do something on the Roku (other than have screen mirroring turned on), or should it just auto-detect an incoming connection?
