i installed windows 764bit on an old laptop.

it was so slow and delayed/clunky and zapped the power even when plugged into the wall.

would it be better if i installed 32bit??

I don't think you can blame PSU sparks on Windows 7 64 bit.

If less than 4Mb of RAM then no advantage of 64bit.

Windows 8.1 has a smaller footprint that Windows 7, you could try that.

what is the smallist operating system which will allow me to run .net applications??

are there any out there which are not windows based that allow you to run .net applications? like my windows based adobe products?? and picasa for windows etc

What age is the laptop? Does it have a Windows license sticker on it? If so what version did it come with?

For a low spec laptop, 32-bit windows is better than 64-bit, it means the machine does not have to waste resources having a split personality.

If you are running 32 bit applications, there is an advantage, albeit largely theoretical unless the thread count is particularly high, in running the 32 bit version of the OS. When you run 32 bit applications on 64 bit Windows, both a 32 bit and 64 bit stack spaces are allocated for each thread, wasting memory and leading to fragmentation.

If I didn't need access to more RAM or 64 bit applications, I'd stick with 32 bit Windows, but I agree with others in that it won't be any faster or capable except under a vary narrow set of conditions.

What about giving windows 10 a whirl? Costs nothing but your time to try, I have tried it on an old single core laptop and C2D desktop and in both cases W10 seems to run significantly better

no. most likely candidate for garbage performance on something that has a 64 bit capable processor will be a low ram and a crappy hard disk.

Put in SSD - problem solved.

32 bit vs 64 bit will make exactly no appreciable difference.

You never answered how much RAM is in the computer. That has a big impact on the question of which edition to use and why your laptop ran slow.

If you wait a while Microsoft are providing .NET on non-Microsoft OS. Right now there are many .NET applications that run under Wine and Mono. Mono compatibility can be tested with MoMA

An old version of Picasa runs on Linux - development stopped in 2012.

I have tried to make everything I have 64 bit, but I did find on a couple of core2 machines that it was way worse than 32 bit when they only had 2 gigs in them. Took it to 4 and it was fine.
