Recently iv been having a lot of problems with windows 8 and Wireless networks.
The main symptoms are extremely slow or non existent browsing speed but the wireless shows it is connected and has access to the internet.
There are a number of issues that produce theese symptoms and i have mananged to solve most of them i.e
1. Atheros Chipset causes problems with encryption when paired with some routers (updating the firmware to latest version --Note Not from microsoft website-- or turning off encryption in router fixes)
2. Microsoft update screws with the winsock table, commonly know as can ping but not browse issue (reset winsock "netsh winsock reset")
but the one i'm having problems with seems to be related specifically to windows 8 itself and the way it handles wireless encryption
as a specific example i have a HP all in one touch screen running windows 8
the wireless network card is an RTL8723
Wireless shows connected and internet accessible (not error messages or yellow icons)
wireless card in the win 8 pc is set to NOT sleep or power save
ipconfig shows correct settings for ipv4 address, gateway, and dns servers (all retrieved by DHCP)
cannot browse web pages
can sometimes load a HTTPS based page
i have at least 6 other devices running various versions of IOS android and windows (not 8) which all work perfectly with and without encryption
for arguments sake the router in question is a UBNT AirGateway running the latest version AIROS (1.14 or something i cant be bothered looking it up) however i don't expect this to have any baring on the problem
various ping tests all return fail including pings to:
google.co.nz
goggle.co.nz ip address
ip address of network Gateway
however turn off the encryption in the wireless router (no security) and everything works fine
I haven't been able to find anything specific to this issue online other than a few references to microsoft removing the WPA and TKIP encryption profiles from windows 8 (but i would expect this to prevent wireless connection all together)
Has anybody else encountered this issues and how did they solve it?
